REESE'S BOOK CLUB PICK An instant New York Times bestseller! "An eerie, atmospheric novel that had me completely on the edge of my seat." --Reese Witherspoon You won't want to leave. . . until you can't. Half-hidden by forest and overshadowed by threatening peaks, Le Sommet has always been a sinister place. Long plagued by troubling rumors, the former abandoned sanatorium has since been renovated into a five-star minimalist hotel. An imposing, isolated getaway spot high up in the Swiss Alps is the last place Elin Warner wants to be. But Elin's taken time off from her job as a detective, so when her estranged brother, Isaac, and his fiancée, Laure, invite her to celebrate their engagement at the hotel, Elin really has no reason not to accept. Arriving in the midst of a threatening storm, Elin immediately feels on edge--there's something about the hotel that makes her nervous. And when they wake the following morning to discover Laure is missing, Elin must trust her instincts if they hope to find her. With the storm closing off all access to the hotel, the longer Laure stays missing, the more the remaining guests start to panic. Elin is under pressure to find Laure, but no one has realized yet that another woman has gone missing. And she's the only one who could have warned them just how much danger they are all in. . .… (més)

I don't know why, but I was expecting way more out of this story.

Overall, the plot is intriguing, and the twist was well laid out. I def. didn't see parts of it coming, but I also feel like it could have been a stronger read if the pacing was a bit faster. I found myself bored throughout many parts of the story. Bouncing around in Elin's head was a bit taxing, and the big reveal about her was brush off too fast.

The setting for the story, being a sanatorium turned hotel, had all the factors of being creepy af, but they weren't being utilized. Instead we are left following around a detective—that is clearly suffering but that too isn't being fully utilized—wondering when the pizzazz is going to happen.

Can't say I'm interested in continuing the series, but it was a satisfying enough read.

You'll love this book if you enjoy mysteries that are toned down, and relaxing to read. ( )

I loved the setting and the author does a great job making you feel like you're there! I felt there was a bit too much focus ( a lot of writing/descriptions) about the snow storm. Probably could have been as effective with less detail. Interesting characters and you're kept in suspense about who the killer is. I had to read the ending several times and am still not sure if I understand whose speaking (the final dialog). Interesting plot and a unique read.

It’s not bad, but I though it would be better.
Elin and her boyfriend Will go to her brother’s engagement party getaway at a luxe hotel in the Swiss Alps that used to be a sanatorium.
They get snowed in and people start disappearing and turning up dead. It’s a locked room mystery type of thing that twists and turns excessively, in my opinion.
Also, the constant flashbacks to Elin’s endless traumas throughout her life get to be too much to the point of being a bore.
Some parts are really good, but they are far and in between.
It’s a “whatever” for me. ( )

This is book 1 of the Elin Warner series. Elin is a police detective, and is on leave. She and her boyfriend, Will, are on a vacation in an isolated place in the Swiss Alps, called The Sanatorium. This is a hotel, from a renovated hospital known for treating tuberculosis patients. It is a sinister place, and there are secrets hidden. When people end up missing and / or dead, Elin is forced to take on the role of a lead investigator as the hotel is cut off from outside help due to a series of avalanches. When her brother, Isaac's, fiance, and Elin's friend, goes missing, Elin must confront her fears, and also face the tragedy that happened in her childhood, when her brother, Sam, died.
This is an eerie start to an exciting new series! ( )

Read this series backwards but it didn’t really matter too much. Could be read as a stand-a-lone. Amazing setting for the story. Good mystery.

I feel there should have been more suspense added to the book. It does give off an eerie feeling (isolated and trapped) but lacking in suspense build up. Still a good read tho. ( )
