Statig schrijdt het plot voort, de ene na de andere pion valt om wanneer de slechte Gloucester (= later koning Richard III) daartoe besluit. Maar de vallende pionnen spreken woorden die aan hun achteloos toegebrachte ondergang een adembenemende diepte verlenen. Waarom! spreekt Edward, de vallende koning: hield niemand mij tegen? Ik liet me ophitsen door Gloucester en stelde mijn lieve broer Clarence terecht. Waarom herinnerde ik me niet hoe Clarence in bloedige veldslagen voor mij vocht? Ik liet me meevoeren in drift en iedereen keek werkeloos toe hoe ik de fout van mijn leven maakte.

Gloucester is gluiperigheid impersonated: het is voortdurend duidelijk dat zijn mooie woorden contrasteren met zijn slechte bedoelingen. Toch hebben die woorden effect, niet alleen op zijn tegenspelers, maar ook op de lezer. Hij probeert bijvoorbeeld de weduwe van een van zijn slachtoffers te verleiden en schuift een ring aan haar vinger: "Look, how this ring encompasseth [your] finger; Even so thy breast encloseth my poor heart." Oh!

Naar het einde toe, als duidelijk wordt dat Gloucester/Richard op zijn beurt ten val gaat komen, verliest de kille carrièretijger af en toe de grip op zichzelf. De nacht voordat de beslissende slag plaatsvindt heeft hij enge dromen en wordt hij klam van het zweet wakker. Steeds is hij simpelweg gewetenloos geweest, maar nu klinkt hij verward en vertwijfeld:

What do I fear? Myself? There’s none else by.
Richard loves Richard; that is, I and I.
Is there a murderer here? No. Yes, I am.
Then fly! What, from myself? Great reason why:
Lest I revenge. What, myself upon myself?
Alack, I love myself. Wherefore? For any good
That I myself have done unto myself?
O, no! Alas, I rather hate myself
For hateful deeds committed by myself.
I am a villain. Yet I lie. I am not.
Fool, of thyself speak well. Fool, do not flatter.

Het gevecht verloopt dramatisch, althans voor Richard. Zijn paard wordt onder hem vandaan gesabeld en dan is het nog maar een kwestie van tijd voordat hij zelf het leven laat. Maar eerst gooit hij er nog een geweldige oneliner uit: "A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse!" ( )
