I don't know what to say. This was a great read.
I'm happy and curious at the ending, how is Earth doing? ( )

I don't think it is possible to geek out any harder over all the science! Brings back my college physics days when we would do off the cuff calculations to solve the craziest things. Sure to be on my Best of the Year list for 2021. ( )

“What do I have to work with? Well, I have an entire laboratory and I know how to use it. But what’s readily at hand? I look around at all the junk that fell to the floor. A bunch of test tubes, sample swabs, Popsicle sticks, a digital stopwatch, pipettes, some Scotch tapes, a pen…Okay, I may have what I need here.”

In “Project Hail Mary” by Andy Weir

Instead of gaffer-tape, maybe the WD40 could be sprayed at the jumping alien in this maybe soon to be a blockbuster of a SF novel like the first one “Artemis”? Einstein kept on repeating the same experiment and failing time after time; he called it bad science, and I would agree. But for some people they shouldn’t bother doing the same again, change what they’re doing because it worked for WD40 anyway...for some it took 40 attempts to get the formulation of WD40 right, before settling on the current one in 1953. That's where it got its name, Water displacement Formulation 40. Weir at his third attempt is still trying to find a winnable “formula”…Our author here only must keep on trying…If this novel ever comes to the big screen I'd love to see that. Even if I happen to live with a slightly spliffy flatmate (alright! Very spliffy flatmate who spends loads of time in front of the telly, with pizza and munchies). And I don't inhale (and that's the truth, there's nothing like living with a herb aficionado and conversing with them with a clear mind; it's most interesting, and I'm not being funny there). Try finding anyone not on GR who has read a complete book in the last decade. Instead we watch streaming TV, and write insipid comments (and reviews like this one) on social media. Reading takes active energy; watching movies is passive. Although bad millions will buy this book and never read it...just waiting for the movie to come out. We’ve become lazy. The majority of college students can’t write a complete sentence with correct grammar, syntax and spelling why should they bother reading books?

My parents did hammer into me as a kid, if at first you don't succeed, try try and try again. Good for you Andy! ( )

In this work Andy Weir returns to his excellent recipe from The Martian moreso than his experiements in Artemis. The technique pays off and we're left with another thrill-packed science-triumph. The story offers plenty of adversity and even some emotional moments of despair, but a calm head and ingenuity can accomplish miracles.

I would highly recommend picking this up on audiobook over paper. To explain why is a spoiler, so just take my word for it. ( )

A lot of the suspense of this book is generated by the reader finding things out at the same time as the narrator, so I’ll forgo the plot summary and simply say that this book begins on a spaceship, and our protagonist has awoken from what appears to be a coma. How he got on the ship, and what his purpose is, he figures out eventually.

Normally I give books huge side-eye when they use the amnesia trope: like how can someone forget their own name but know how to manipulate technology, etc.? Usually that kind of amnesia would have resulted from a brain injury so traumatic that chances of a full recovery are slim. But in this case, because the ship was keeping the protagonist alive and doing a fair bit of his thinking for him until he woke up more fully, I was somehow more inclined to suspend my disbelief. (In contrast, I bailed on Peter May’s Coffin Road because of the amnesia trope; the protagonist wasn’t kept alive in the same way.)

This book, in short, was SO GOOD. I stayed up late to finish it. It did run a bit long, but it was worth it. The ending was exactly what I hoped for; it was perfect. I would definitely watch this if it were a movie, and I’d recommend it if you liked The Martian. ( )
