An exhilarating spy thriller written by an intelligence veteran about two women CIA agents whose paths become intertwined around a threat to the Russia Division??one that's coming from inside the agency.

Lyndsey Duncan worries her career with the CIA might be over. After lines are crossed with another intelligence agent during an assignment, she is sent home to Washington on administrative leave. So when a former colleague??now Chief of the Russia Division??recruits her for an internal investigation, she jumps at the chance to prove herself. Lyndsey was once a top handler in the Moscow Field Station, where she was known as the "human lie detector" and praised for recruiting some of the most senior Russian officials. But now, three Russian assets have been exposed??including one of her own??and the CIA is convinced there's a mole in the department. With years of work in question and lives on the line, Lyndsey is thrown back into life at the agency, this time tracing the steps of those closest to her.
Meanwhile, fellow agent Theresa Warner can't avoid the spotlight. She is the infamous "Red Widow," the wife of a former director killed in the field under mysterious circumstances. With her husband's legacy shadowing her every move, Theresa is a fixture of the Russia Division, and as she and Lyndsey strike up an unusual friendship, her knowledge proves invaluable. But as Lyndsey uncovers a surprising connection to Theresa that could answer all of her questions, she unearths a terrifying web of secrets within the department, if only she i

I don't read many espionage thrillers, so I don't have a great breadth of experience to compare with, but I really enjoyed this. I thought it was well paced, definitely a page-turner, and I found the main characters interesting and complex. This seems like the start to a series I will enjoy following for many years. ( )

Lyndsey Duncan, after great early success with the Moscow Station, is in a bit of disgrace in Beirut and returns to Langley. Her first asset has died on the way to the US under strange circumstances and others are missing. She is pulled into the investigation by Eric Newman and spends much of her time huddled in a makeshift office in front of a computer screen. Co-worker Theresa Warner is the Widow and a friendship (as much as one can have at the CIA) begins. This is timely in its' look at espionage in regard to Russia, Putin and what lengths they will strive for to cover up indiscretions. There is a lot of action at home in Virginia as Lyndsey uncovers the truth about a two year old job that ended with a dead agent and todays missing assets. ( )

When your place of work is based on deception and duplicity how do you decide whom you can trust? And how do you navigate those shark infested waters? Alma Katsu’s wonderfully paced and plotted book “Red Widow” puts us in the mind of Lyndsey Duncan who is a still young CIA analyst trying to find her footing after a misstep in an overseas posting. The story is compelling and Ms. Katsu brings years of actual work in the intelligence community to her writing and it shows in the reality of the story. Lyndsey has to continually pivot and update her perception of the facts and of people while trying to find a mole in the agency. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and rushed to finish it so I could find out what would happen. A very enjoyable read. ( )

2.5 stars rounded down -- not enough action for a spy thriller. Lyndsey is under a professional review for having an affair with a British spy when a former boss asks her to investigate whether there is a mole in the Russia section at Langley headquarters or in Moscow, following the disappearance of two spies with different expertises/handlers. Then Lyndsey's prize asset in Moscow dies on a flight from Moscow to NYC to Washington DC of an apparent heart attack, and she finds a voicemail telling her he has important news to share. Suspicion falls on the Widow, whose spy husband was supposedly killed trying to extract a source without CIA approval. Too much procedure and office politics for me. ( )

Hats off to author Katsu for giving us mostly unpredictable and — more importantly — plausible plot twists. Reminded me of Michael Crichton at his finest. However, the ending of RED WIDOW rang a little hollow, but I enjoyed the book overall and will read future novels by her.
