The Phantom of the Opera is the longest running show in Broadway history and the most successful musical of all time. It has been seen on stage by over 140 million people worldwide since it first opened in London on October 9, 1986 at Her Majesty's Theatre, which has been its home ever since. Now it has been transformed into this outstanding Graphic Novel, illustrated by José María Beroy and adapted by Cavan Scott from the original Libretto written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Charles Hart and Richard Stilgoe. The timeless story, based on the original book by Gaston Leroux, sees the beautiful soprano Christine Daaé become the obsession of the hideously disfigured and mysterious Phantom of the Opera, the musical genius who rules - through fear - the Paris Opera House from his subterranean lair deep beneath the streets of Paris. Relive every moment and every song of the classic stage musical - from the legendary chandelier crash, to Christine's first visit to the Paris catacombs and the Phantom's lair: Open your mind, let your fantasies unwind and let this book take you back to the wonders of the Phantom of the… (més)

It hurts me to write this, but this adaptation is terrible. It makes me sad how terrible this is. What made it so terrible? The fact that the 2004 movie heavily influenced the design. This is basically the 2004 movie with costumes and character design from the stage show. And I even question the appearance of the costumes as depicted here. Seriously? The artist did the Wishing gown dirty. And what the eff was that wedding gown? That monstrosity bears no resemblance to Maria Björnson's memorable creation.

The legacy of the 2004 movie isn't great. Why reuse the designs for a book supposedly based on the stage show? I also really didn't like how Erik is portrayed. The way he is in this novel, one has to wonder why Christine has any feelings for him at all. He comes off creepy and scary, with none of the allure of his stage counterpart. One is relieved when Christine departs with Raoul, leaving Erik to his fate. She doesn't even come back to return his ring, instead listening to his "I love you" as it echoes down a corridor. Seriously, wtf?

I can't recommend this to anyone. ( )
