"All children have imaginary friends, Georgina tells herself. It's perfectly normal, and they all grow out of it in the end. But when her seven-year-old son, Cody, tells her about New Granny, the new friend he's met in the park, Georgina is instantly suspicious. Something-call it maternal instinct-tells her he isn't making it up. But maybe Georgina is losing her mind. It wouldn't be the first time, after all. And with her own mother's recent death leaving her bereft and trying to cope with life as a busy working mom, it's no wonder she's feeling paranoid that Cody has invented a "New Granny" to replace his beloved grandmother. Her husband, Bren, becomes the voice of reason, assuring Georgina that it's just a game, the product of their son's overactive imagination. But what if Cody's imaginary friend is not so imaginary after all?"--… (més)

It took me a while to get into this book but I'm glad I stuck with it because it really is a great read! Just when you think you know what is going on, you get knocked sideways with another twist! I will definitely be reading Ryan's other books. ( )

Wow! These short chapters were amazing... and it only took 2.5 pages (the first chapter) to absolutely suck me in! I probably shouldn't have read this so close to going to bed, but when do I every listen to intuition? I'm the blond girl running up the stairs in a horror flick... Rachel Ryan brilliantly tells a tale about a boy and his "imaginary friend"... but is he really imagining this woman or is she real?

Anyone looking for a good, haunting tale MUST read this one. Definitely going to be hard to top this one!

Thank you for allowing me to listen and give my honest opinion! ( )

What a story! I have children and they have children. I could imagine this story happening to them. That’s the really scary part isn’t it? When you’re reading it and thinking about people you love. Which one of my children was most like Cody? Who had imaginary friends? What would I have been thinking? How would I react? Every twist that came along, I was seeing it play out in my mind. Being a mother in Ireland or in the States, you are still a mother, possibly a wife with an imperfect marriage. A daughter still grieving and trying to do everything, take care of everyone. It’s easy to lose your self, to lose your way, to be lost in between what you know and secrets that have been withheld. I was mad at Bren and at times mad at Georgina. What do you have when trust is gone? This book kept me turning pages. I was guessing and second guessing throughout the book. The final chapters had me frequently holding my breath. Now I need someone else to read it so I can ask them what they thought and discuss all the ways it could have ended along with how it did.
Thank you to the publishers, author and Goodreads for offering this book in a Goodreads Giveaway. I won it but am under no obligation to review the book. I voluntarily reviewed it and based my review on my thoughts and feelings while reading the book. I started it once and, due to illness, had to put it aside. Then picked it up again and read it nearly nonstop. ( )

Georgia has been going through some tough times. Her mother has recently died, and she has reasons to suspect that her husband has been less than honest concerning his recent dealings with an old girlfriend. He admits to crossing a line when it comes to fidelity, but just how far he went remains to be seen, or proven. When Georgia’s young son Cody starts talking about his new granny, worry becomes Georgia’s foremost emotion. More strange occurrences feed her fears. Is there cause to worry, or is she just being paranoid, as her husband insists? And then, the really bad thing happens. This tale is a page turner for sure. The characters seem real, and the tension practically leaps off the page. This debut novel, filled with emotion and suspense, is a winner. ( )

A woman is left to feel crazy after her son starts telling her he has a "new grandma", her mother died years ago. As things get more sinister and her son starts getting gifts, chocolates, candy, etc, her son tells her this grandma does not exist and it's a game. Things quickly become more sinister as things start happening around home, phone calls, notes, her flower pots smashed in her driveway. Her husband insists she needs to go to a psychiatrist and that's it's all in her head, but what he is really covering is his incomptence as a good husband and father. She finds an old photo of her dad with a woman she does not know, who is this person? And why does her dad all the sudden become mad at her and disappear after he signs himself out of the hospital? Things neatly tie themselves together at the end as her son is kidnapped and it's a race against time to figure out who his stalker is. It was very heart pounding in the end when she goes to save him from someone who will stop at nothing to become the perfect grandma. I really enjoyed this book and I once again thank NetGalley for such a fun, exciting read. ( )
