A woman desperate to turn a new page heads to the Scottish coast and finds herself locked in a battle of wills with an infuriatingly aloof bookseller in this utterly heartwarming debut, perfect for readers of Evvie Drake Starts Over. "Humor and charm abound . . . [This] love story hits the spot."--Publishers Weekly Thea Mottram is having a bad month. She's been let go from her office job with no notice--and to make matters even worse, her husband of nearly twenty years has decided to leave her for one of her friends. Bewildered and completely lost, Thea doesn't know what to do. But when she learns that a distant great uncle in Scotland has passed away, leaving her his home and a hefty antique book collection, she decides to leave Sussex for a few weeks. Escaping to a small coastal town where no one knows her seems to be exactly what she needs. Almost instantly, Thea becomes enamored with the quaint cottage, comforted by its cozy rooms and lovely but neglected garden. The locals in nearby Baldochrie are just as warm, quirky, and inviting. The only person she can't seem to win over is bookshop owner Edward Maltravers, to whom she hopes to sell her uncle's book collection. His gruff attitude--fueled by an infamous, long-standing feud with his brother, a local lord--tests Thea's patience. But bickering with Edward proves oddly refreshing and exciting, leading Thea to develop feelings she hasn't experienced in a long time. As she follows a thrilling yet terrifying impulse to stay in Scotland indefinitely, Thea realizes that her new life may quickly become just as complicated as the one she was running from.… (més)

I really enjoyed this book. It ticked a lot of boxes for me: strong female protagonist, humorous, starting over, finding happiness, set in Scotland. I'm looking forward to whatever the author writes next! ( )

Thea’s life isn’t going so well. She’s just lost her job. Her husband has just left her for one of her friends. And now she has to deal with an unexpected inheritance from a great-uncle in Scotland whose, no doubt crumbling, lodge will require huge amounts of attention and effort. As there is no time like the present for getting things in order, Thea heads from Sussex to Dumfries to sort out her great-uncle Andrew’s estate and maybe also her own life. We follow Thea as she negotiates a new environment, makes new friends, gets a job in a second-hand bookshop, and finds the love in and of her life.

Surely Thea is the best thing about this novel. She is wonderful. Full of gumption, emotionally raw, brave and foolish in equal measure, and just a nice person. She sees the best in people, including her grumpy new employer. And while this can sometimes work against her — as evidenced by her cheating husband and disloyal friend — it usually doesn’t. She makes friends and she is a catalyst for others to become friends. I like her.

There are lots of openings for criticism of this first novel. I’m going to set those aside. There are some very well-executed set pieces. There is a lot of emotional growth that sensibly can’t happen in an instant. Our heroine isn’t perfect; she just is always willing to keep trying. And it just feels like there is a lot of generosity and kindness behind the words.

If you like a light romance and enjoy seeing a woman in her early forties finding joy in life, then this novel will work for you.

Very gently recommended. ( )

I wanted to love this book sooo badly because who wouldn’t love a mysterious Scottish book salesman and the idea of dropping everything and moving to a serene place far away from all your troubles?

Unfortunately, that’s where the whimsy ended for me. The characters were really cliche, predictable, and fell flat. Honestly, I was bored for most of the book, but because I chronically force myself to finish books I hate—here we are.

I’m not mad that I read this book but I probably wouldn’t pick it up again. ( )

An excellent story for providing entertainment and good feelings this Christmas Eve.

Meet Thea, a forty-something who is down-sized out of her job; and less than two weeks later, her husband asks for adivorce because he’s wants to marry a friend of hers. Just as life feels as if it is crashing around her ears, Thea becomes heir to a great uncle’s estate in Scotland. Partly to get away and partly to settle the estate, she travels north.

In her great uncle’s library are books. Many of them are valuable. Lucky for Thea, there is a book dealer in the village to help dispose of the collection. He also has a brother willing to buy the property that was once part of the local manor. Rather than make a quick get-away, Thea decides to stay on for a bit, landing a job at the bookshop, until her divorce is final.

Thea finds herself caught up in a long-standing feud between brothers even as she struggles to find her own place in the world.

On the surface, this story explores Thea’s journey into being single after twenty years of marriage. But the primary themes are relationships and betrayals of all kinds. The author does this with sensitivity, good humor, and a touch of romance. I would not be at all surprised to see this made into a movie. ( )

*A Thank you to NetGalley and Ballantine Books for allowing me to read this. This is my honest and unbiased review*

Thea is such a better person than I am because if I had found out my husband was cheating on me with my friend I would have went ballistic, but fortunately for her things turned out so much better for her in the end. I loved Thea, I felt she was realistic and down to earth, even if she was a bit too down to earth. I was not sure about Edward at first, I thought he was going to just be a complete Jerk the entire time but he proved me wrong.

Their romance was subtle and somewhat of a slow burn which I loved. You see them become friends, then you see them start to have feelings. It was great to watch their relationship blossom. I loved the small town vibes but wished they included the townfolk just a little bit more, but I could understand why they didn't

Overall, a nice start again romance for those of us a bit older. ( )
