Business. Sociology. Nonfiction. Economics. HTML:In the tradition of Fast Food Nation and The Omnivore's Dilemma, an extraordinary investigation into the human lives at the heart of the American grocery store

What does it take to run the American supermarket? How do products get to shelves? Who sets the price? And who suffers the consequences of increased convenience end efficiency? In this alarming exposé, author Benjamin Lorr pulls back the curtain on this highly secretive industry. Combining deep sourcing, immersive reporting, and compulsively readable prose, Lorr leads a wild investigation in which we learn:
? The secrets of Trader Joe??s success from Trader Joe himself
? Why truckers call their job ??sharecropping on wheels?
? What it takes for a product to earn certification labels like ??organic? and ??fair trade?
? The struggles entrepreneurs face as they fight for shelf space, including essential tips, tricks, and traps for any new food business
? The truth behind the alarming slave trade in the shrimp industry
The result is a page-turning portrait of an industry in flux, filled with the passion, ingenuity, and exploitation required to make this everyday miracle continue to function. The product of five years of research and hundreds of interviews across every level of the industry, The Secret Life of Groceries delivers powerful social commentary on the inherently American quest

this book was way more interesting and informative than it had any right to be. Who knew groceries were at the center of such dark stories. The author did his research on so many aspects f the grocery business, it's amazing. there is a somewhat funny rags to riches story about how Trader Joes came to be to hook you at the beginning, then information on what life is like for truckers, animals being processed for eventual consumption and even modern day slaves, imprisoned so we can have cheap shrimp. I read it because it was on a list of Mary Roache reccommendations for best "true crime" books ,but the real crime would've been passing up on this gem ( )

Both amazing and depressing. The things people do that drive our system, and the system that drives people to do the things they do. ( )

The beginning of this book really grabbed me, so interesting to hear of the start of Trader Joes. After that it went downhill for me. ( )

This covers so much, but there were so many things that weren’t even touched on. I guess that makes sense since groceries is a pretty all encompassing topic. What this boils down to is no ethical consumption under capitalism, and you can only know the morality of your food if you grow it yourself. The trucking industry is a nightmare, but nothing compared to the slave boats that are harvesting shrimp. Nothing mentioned about food waste, food deserts, or immigrants in our own country that we depend on. ( )

A must read for anyone interested in the sticky, unsightly glue that holds together the world's current agriculture practices and America's consumption habits. ( )

The modern American supermarket is a marvel. Species from every season and every part of the globe lie in perfectly aligned stacks, cold and fresh. The middle aisles overflow with foods that remain edible for years and are engineered to give maximum immediate pleasure.
