I really loved this book. I’ve read other books about the Donner Party but this book was by far the best. It was written from a teenager’s point of view which made it a captivating read. ( )Ressenya escrita per a Crítics Matiners de LibraryThing . This book for younger readers relates the story of the Donner Party through the eyes of a teenager survivor. The party attempted to take a shortcut which ended up taking longer and leaving them stranded in the Sierra Nevadas without enough food. It managed to describe the problem and minimize the "gross" factor. While the middle school age boy will definitely pick up on the cannibalism, it won't leave him with nightmares. The book appears to be well-researched, and it was told in a manner younger readers will enjoy. I received an electronic copy through LibraryThing Early Reviewers with the expectation of an honest review. Ressenya escrita per a Crítics Matiners de LibraryThing . This is a good read for young readers. It deals with the horrible travails of the Donner Party without being unduly gory. (Just enough macabre detail to hold the interest of pre-teen boys without being too gross.) The pacing is crisp and the historical details are accurate and well-sourced.There is excellent material at the end to direct readers to historical records and it should help some readers get more involved with the overall history of the West. The protagonist seems to experience precognition "visions" which are not explained very well but serve as a good foreshadowing device to build suspense. Ressenya escrita per a Crítics Matiners de LibraryThing . The story is told from the perspective of young Zeke, a teamster caring for Mr. Reed's herds. He is a young man working his way to California to join his family who left hurriedly fleeing creditors. We follow the group through harrowing Indian raids, poor decisions and wrong turns. The group decides to follow well know trail guide on a short cut to catch up with their original party. After an altercation Zeke finds himself in charge of the Reed family as they miss the pass leading through the mountains by a few hours delay to rest and become stranded. The party sends out groups for help who will survive, who will succumb to starvation, will the help make it back? Will Zeke survive the bear and the Indians?I read this book on one sitting and was suprised when I had finished that quickly. It is a fast moving story with moving characters. At end of the story, there is an appendix to explain what became of each character. Overall a good read. Ressenya escrita per a Crítics Matiners de LibraryThing . Zeke is 17 and headed out West to California, the promised land that anyone can stake a claim and live a good life. He's part of a wagon train and is supposed to be taking care of the cow herds. This is all new territory to the people in the wagons and they don't know the danger they are heading into.Library Thing and the author shared this book with me for review (thank you). It has been published and you can buy a copy now. Zeke has visions of the future but he tries not to tell anyone about it. They think he's crazy if he does. But this trip gives him an opportunity to use those visions a lot. There are Indian guides, parents and children of all ages in the group. When they come to a spot in the road where they can cut their trip down, they decide to take it. It becomes the Donner party then. As they struggle to climb the Sierra Nevada's mountain range, they lose stock, find themselves running out of food, and then it starts to snow... This story is sad because not many survive. When the food is gone and the cattle are gone, one of the men turns into a cannibal. That's when Zeke decides to leave. This written for intermediate readers and is based on a true story. You'll feel like it's you shivering in the snow... It's educational and a good read with a section at the back giving you facts about the survivors. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya

"7-year-old Zeke is thrilled to be heading west with over eighty settlers on the famed Oregon Trail. But when their wagon train takes an ill-advised short cut, the pioneers find themselves trapped in a frozen mountain pass. As howling winter storms rage around the Donner Party, there's no way forward or back. Faced with starvation, Zeke must attempt to walk out of the wilderness on sheer willpower alone. Can he ever hope to make it to California? Can he ever hope to escape? Based on actual survivor accounts and hours of research, this inspirational story is exceptionally vivid, swift-paced, and stirring. The Westward Expansion is a tale of Indians and pioneers, mountains, deserts and places where the buffalo roamed, of covered wagons and horses and a new country taking shape. This is the 5th children's book in the I Escaped Series about brave kids who face real-world challenges and find ways to escape. Sure to appeal to fans of books like I Survived by New York Times Bestseller Lauren Tarshis, Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales, American frontier stories for kids, and Bound For Oregon by Jean Van Leeuwen. Packed with a special section on facts about the Oregon Trail and much more. Includes survivor photos. An adrenaline-charged tale of bravery, fellowship and non-stop action about one of the most poignant tragedies in American history." -- No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
