Paula McClain is one of my favorite authors so I was excited to read this book that deviated from her norm. Turns out I loved it! This is a very atmospheric literary mystery that reminded me of Tana French's earlier works. ( )

Anna Hart attempts to make amends for some unexplained guilt in her personal life in When the Stars Go Dark. Paula McLain’s latest novel follows the missing person detective as she retreats to her old foster family home. She is supposed to be on leave, but her respite is short-lived when she discovers that her hometown has experienced linked disappearances of young women. As a distraction to her own woes, Anna convinces the lead investigator (and old friend) to allow her to act as an “unofficial consultant” on the most recent case. Her growing obsession with the investigation reflects her desperate quest for absolution and reparation, but the reader will not find out what is burdening her until the very end of the novel. When Stars Go Dark also recalls the non-fictional case of Polly Klaas from 1994. Linking a real example with her own fictitious ones, McLain illustrates how current advances in technology and methodology would have greatly helped in solving the Klaas case. This book would be a good pick for a true-crime devotee looking to dip their toes into fictionalized rendering of real life events.

Thanks to the author, Ballantine and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an unbiased review. ( )

I liked this book, she makes a mystery more of a psychological story, it was a good read. ( )

Detective in Mendicino -- missing girl, town personalities ( )

It took ninety percent of their book for the reveal of what had happened to Anna Hart but the references were on every page. It must have been terrible - after all her husband had told her he needed a break, her son needed a break and that meant she had to find her way alone. She only wants to go back to work thinking it will help but even her boss tells her she needs time and persepective.

Detective Anna Hart is a very damaged woman. Where do you go when you are lost? Where do you go when you are wrecked? Anna heads to the place she used to call home. Living rough and avoiding the world works for a very short time until she crosses paths with an old friend who is now head of law enforcement in her hometown of Mendocino. A girl has gone missing and the place Anna hoped would help her heal is only filled with “ghosts and clues”. More girls will go missing and will be lost forever. Needing to be needed and active Anna asks to help with the investigation. She has the tools and the knowledge to find the girl but can she? Will she?

The story is very dark and disturbing and very well handled. There are equal parts of a crime story, psychological drama, true case history told from the perspective of someone who is an adept profiler. Thank you Ballantine Books and NetGalley for a copy. ( )
