17th Mary Russell mystery takes Mary and Sherlock to Roumania, actually Transylvania, because Queen Victoria's granddaughter who is the Queen of Roumania is having a problem. Someone is trying to ruin her reputation and harm her youngest daughter. This one has great historical detail and also rumors of witchcraft and vampires. ( )

Very well crafted story revolving around the feeding and spread of villagers' superstitions toward destabilization of Queen Marie's popularity as the local ruler restoring the castle and improving economic conditions in village. Odd incidents and accidents are designed to trigger comparisons between Marie and a prior blood-soaked, murdering Queen. ( )

This book continues the story line of Mary Russell Holmes and her husband Sherlock Holmes, as a spinoff from the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories. In this latest edition, Mary assists her husband as they investigate mysterious happenings in Europe, reminiscent of the famous Dracula scenes of Bram Stoker. The author skillfully weaves elements of folklore and mythology into this latest installment in the series.

Creepy and intriguing, this is a perfect read for a dark and stormy night. Readers who are familiar with the series will enjoy this latest addition, although it can be read as a stand alone.

I received this novel from the publisher and from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own. ( )

Can it really be the 17th book in the series? I've read them all and enjoyed them all - some more than others, but as a whole I highly recommend this series - and Mary Russell is one of my favorite characters. In "Castle Shade" Mary is just as clever, assertive, and fearless as ever. Her adventures, as well as her relationship with Sherlock Holmes, kept me turning the pages. And I couldn't stop thinking about the plot and the mystery when I wasn't able to actually sit down and read.

Heads up, though - the book takes about 50 pages to really get going, as author Laurie King spends a longish time at the beginning describing the castle and surrounding area as well as the politics. But it's worth trudging through this section so don't give up.

I especially liked the way King included the theme of fairy tales throughout - Queen Marie grew up loving fairy tales, she is gifted a castle, she has a beautiful young princess daughter, the legends of vampires, witches and magic spells, and other elements are sprinkled throughout that I won't share here since that would give away the mystery - so you'll have to find out for yourself what else is included.

You could read this book without having read the series, but I urge you to definitely pick up the others (and read in order if you can) as the mysteries and the relationship of Russell and Holmes are well-written and cleverly constructed. "Castle Shade" is an exciting and satisfying read. ( )
