A riveting, deeply personal account of history in the making--from the president who inspired us to believe in the power of democracy #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * NAACP IMAGE AWARD NOMINEE * NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The Washington Post * Jennifer Szalai, The New York Times * NPR * The Guardian * Marie Claire   In the stirring, highly anticipated first volume of his presidential memoirs, Barack Obama tells the story of his improbable odyssey from young man searching for his identity to leader of the free world, describing in strikingly personal detail both his political education and the landmark moments of the first term of his historic presidency--a time of dramatic transformation and turmoil. Obama takes readers on a compelling journey from his earliest political aspirations to the pivotal Iowa caucus victory that demonstrated the power of grassroots activism to the watershed night of November 4, 2008, when he was elected 44th president of the United States, becoming the first African American to hold the nation's highest office. Reflecting on the presidency, he offers a unique and thoughtful exploration of both the awesome reach and the limits of presidential power, as well as singular insights into the dynamics of U.S. partisan politics and international diplomacy. Obama brings readers inside the Oval Office and the White House Situation Room, and to Moscow, Cairo, Beijing, and points beyond. We are privy to his thoughts as he assembles his cabinet, wrestles with a global financial crisis, takes the measure of Vladimir Putin, overcomes seemingly insurmountable odds to secure passage of the Affordable Care Act, clashes with generals about U.S. strategy in Afghanistan, tackles Wall Street reform, responds to the devastating Deepwater Horizon blowout, and authorizes Operation Neptune's Spear, which leads to the death of Osama bin Laden. A Promised Land is extraordinarily intimate and introspective--the story of one man's bet with history, the faith of a community organizer tested on the world stage. Obama is candid about the balancing act of running for office as a Black American, bearing the expectations of a generation buoyed by messages of "hope and change," and meeting the moral challenges of high-stakes decision-making. He is frank about the forces that opposed him at home and abroad, open about how living in the White House affected his wife and daughters, and unafraid to reveal self-doubt and disappointment. Yet he never wavers from his belief that inside the great, ongoing American experiment, progress is always possible. This beautifully written and powerful book captures Barack Obama's conviction that democracy is not a gift from on high but something founded on empathy and common understanding and built together, day by day.… (més)

What an interesting glimpse back into what was going on during the Obama presidency; as someone who was a child in '08 when the housing market crashed, it was a really illuminating biography that helped me contextualize our current political world.

A Pulitzer for this incredible comprehensive dissertation on American politics guided by a real, intelligent, and honorable President.

Readers may love that our President didn't believe that he was "a particularly good candidate." ( )

I will start off by saying that I listened to the audiobook as it is read by Obama but I will warn everyone - he reads VERY SLOWLY and it is a monster of a book to begin with. I don't know if I could have listened to it if I couldn't have sped him up! He, himself, joked that Michelle told him she listened to it at 1.5 - I was faster than that. lol! But, that aside, the book is a very interesting, very detailed account of Obama's first term and beginnings of his political career. I read some complaints that it was too centered on political business and not enough about his personal life but I really loved getting such a detailed perspective on how he approached legislative and military decisions, all the interactions and bartering within his own party as well as the opposing party. You can see the emergence of what has brought us to where we are now (and hopefully will never be again) but it made me appreciate so much more his intelligence and integrity. Obviously, there are politicians that are just self-serving and immoral, but I also think all politicians (good and bad) compromise some of their ideals and ethnics to get things done. However, there should be a fundamental decency inherent in the person who holds the office. It matters and it makes a difference. I think the next book will really be eye-opening, knowing what will be covered and the where it ends, and am very much looking forward to it. ( )

A MUST READ for every American, regardless of personal politics and/or beliefs.

When President Obama was first elected, I was 17 and turned 18 one month after the election, so I was not able to vote. About 3 years later I left to go abroad for medical school and missed the second election as well. I am stating my age and missed votes because I have learned now how much I didn't know during these years about how our election system works and how our government rules. This book is so important for young Americans to read if only to get a perspective of how much the President is actually responsible for compared to what we expect from him (and future her).

Reading this book has shown me a very different worldview of social issues: the view of a leader versus that of a citizen, and while I like to think I'm pretty open-minded, some obstacles just didn't occur to me as problems before reading this.

When I went to purchase a digital copy as a gift for someone, I noticed there was a surprisingly large number of 1-star reviews, and all of them were negative comments about former President Obama's character. Many of them stated that he is a liar and a narcissist, and this autobiography of his first term is just a self-congratulatory book when he "didn't do anything for this country". NONE of the negative reviews detailed any research on the policies or bills his office was able to pass and proceeded to fall down the trap our modern news media has steadily conditioned the public to fall for: If someone does not agree with EVERY SINGLE one of your beliefs, they are your enemy.

I strongly recommend going into this book with no expectations, and a reminder that whoever holds the position of president is also a human being and, therefore, also prone to human mistakes. I might not agree with all the decisions his cabinet made, and there might be some censured information in this book, but it is important to see the perspectives and feelings of the people we elect to office when they make decisions, to give us insight on how to make better and more informed decisions on who we vote for, and what we want and need as an American. An image careful retelling of Obama's campaign for the Presidency and the first years, finishing with the elimination of Osama bin Laden. There is a strong focus on the legislation that he got through congress, and how with the ever present background chorus of GOP opposition. The prose is workmanlike, but never compelling. ( )

[Preface] I began writing this book shortly after the end of my presidency--after Michelle and I had boarded Air Force One for the last time and traveled west for a long-deferred break.
Of all the rooms and halls and landmarks that make up the White House and its grounds, it was the West Colonnade that I loved best.

For war was contradiction, as was the history of America.
Looking back, I sometimes ponder the age-old question of how much difference the particular characteristics of individual leaders make in the sweep of history---whether those of us who rise to power are mere conduits for the deep, relentless currents of the times or whether we're at least partly the authors of what's to come.
