Fantasy. Romance. Young Adult Fiction. Young Adult Literature. HTML:NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER ? A princess in exile, a shapeshifting dragon, six enchanted cranes, and an unspeakable curse... Drawing from fairy tales and East Asian folklore, this original fantasy from the author of Spin the Dawn is perfect for fans of Shadow and Bone.
"A dazzling fairytale full of breathtaking storytelling." ??Stephanie Garber, New York Times bestselling author of Caraval
Shiori'anma, the only princess of Kiata, has a secret. Forbidden magic runs through her veins. Normally she conceals it well, but on the morning of her betrothal ceremony, Shiori loses control. At first, her mistake seems like a stroke of luck, forestalling the wedding she never wanted. But it also catches the attention of Raikama, her stepmother.
A sorceress in her own right, Raikama banishes the young princess, turning her brothers into cranes. She warns Shiori that she must speak of it to no one: for with every word that escapes her lips, one of her brothers will die.
Penniless, voiceless, and alone, Shiori searches for her brothers, and uncovers a dark conspiracy to seize the throne. Only Shiori can set the kingdom to rights, but to do so she must place her trust in a paper bird, a mercurial dragon, and the very boy she fought so hard not to marry. And she must embrace the magic she's been taught all her life to forswear??no matter what the cost.

Weaving together elements of The Wild Swans, Cinderella, the legend of Chang E, and the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, Elizabeth Lim has crafted a fantasy like no other, and one that will stay with readers long after they've turned the last page.

"A stunning remake of a fairytale. Six Crimson Cranes is the perfect blend of whimsy and ferociousness, with twists and turns that will tug at your heartstrings." ??Chloe Gong, New York Times bestselling author of These Violent Delights

Even knowing it's a fairy tale, I found the situations and events to be too unbelievable, and I didn't find the main character to be very sympathetic. ( )

* I got this book for review from the publisher for my honest thoughts*
I really loved this read. I thought it was super unique read. The structure reminded me so much of the structure of spin the dawn. I was a tad more invested in these characters and really loved how the fairytale elements was mixed with fantsay elements. This book also had some really fun and unexpected twists and turns. I also really loved the main character of this read and the focus on siblings realtionships. I also really loved the political alliance (marrige that was featured) def excited for the sequel! ( )

SO YOU JUST GONNA LEAVE ME LIKE?

:Cracks knuckles: Folks I just spent the last two chaptere crying because Lim decided to be like "Oh Lexie you think you're sooo clever knowing all the fairy tales involved? SUFFER"

Because fairy tales are honest to god misery machines I swear it.

What starts as a story about a spoiled, if likeable, princess learning that curiosity does skin the cat weaves itself into a tale of family, friendship, jealousy and love...making it indeed worthy of the Tales it takes inspiration from.

Dragon Rights however.

In some ways knowing the principle Tale this book pays homage to, I felt a little impatient to get to my favorite bits of that Tale. That's a problem of MY OWN and no reflection on Lim's writing. She deftly moves Shiori through the seasons, teaching her humility as well as her own patience. We linger longest in the North (Iro), but as the pieces come together that makes sense.

I wished for more Seryu, but it looks like my wish comes true in the next book. For this one we wrap up the Curse, as well as mysteries about Raikama and Shiori's own magic.

And of course I CRIED for a character who deserves their OWN book if we're being honest. ( )

Wonderful cover! This story wasn't for me. I found the story a little lackluster and boring. I wanted to like the brothers, but I didn’t get a chance to know them before everything unfolds. There wasn’t enough of the dragon prince for me either.

I’m sorry, but the paper bird, Kiki, was annoying. It didn’t really add anything, and she wasn’t a cute or fun magical animal sidekick either. This story was more plot-driven than character-driven, so I accredit that to the lack of emotion I feel for the characters.

On the positive side, I never knew where the story was going. It kept averting expectations. I like that the author tried to show no person is just good or evil. I think the rocky, tense relationship between Shiori and her stepmother is one of the best parts. Also, YA male leads have evolved. Gone are the sulky, angsty bad boys. In this era, we’re getting sweet, kind boys who can communicate. Now, I think Shiori and Takkun are dry to be honest, but their connection is sweet.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t enthused with this book, but I might have to read book 2. ugh, they’re going to the underwater Dragon kingdom. :/ I wanna read that ( )
