NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * A princess in exile, a shapeshifting dragon, six enchanted cranes, and an unspeakable curse... Drawing from fairy tales and East Asian folklore, this original fantasy from the author of Spin the Dawn is perfect for fans of Shadow and Bone. "A dazzling fairytale full of breathtaking storytelling." --Stephanie Garber, New York Times bestselling author of Caraval Shiori'anma, the only princess of Kiata, has a secret. Forbidden magic runs through her veins. Normally she conceals it well, but on the morning of her betrothal ceremony, Shiori loses control. At first, her mistake seems like a stroke of luck, forestalling the wedding she never wanted. But it also catches the attention of Raikama, her stepmother. A sorceress in her own right, Raikama banishes the young princess, turning her brothers into cranes. She warns Shiori that she must speak of it to no one: for with every word that escapes her lips, one of her brothers will die. Penniless, voiceless, and alone, Shiori searches for her brothers, and uncovers a dark conspiracy to seize the throne. Only Shiori can set the kingdom to rights, but to do so she must place her trust in a paper bird, a mercurial dragon, and the very boy she fought so hard not to marry. And she must embrace the magic she's been taught all her life to forswear--no matter what the cost.   Weaving together elements of The Wild Swans, Cinderella, the legend of Chang E, and the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, Elizabeth Lim has crafted a fantasy like no other, and one that will stay with readers long after they've turned the last page.   "A stunning remake of a fairytale. Six Crimson Cranes is the perfect blend of whimsy and ferociousness, with twists and turns that will tug at your heartstrings." --Chloe Gong, New York Times bestselling author of These Violent Delights   "Fast-paced excitement is balanced with a satisfyingly intricate plot that weaves in elements from Western fairy tales and East Asian folklore." --SLJ, starred review "A richly imagined landscape . . . vibrant, fast-paced." --Publishers Weekly, starred review  … (més)

I've read another book I really like inspired by the same story as this one. The dialogue at times felt really unnatural and I am a bit tired of seeing dragons that turn into men that turn into love interests.
The first paragraphs were really good, but the rest I read was not enough to keep me engaged. It's just not the book for me.

6 Crimson Cranes follow Shoiri, a Princess who wants nothing but to make her own fate and freedom, especially since she discovered she has magical abilities that are considered illegal and dangerous. A dragon of the sacred lake is teaching her to harness her magic, including a paper bird she accidentally brought to life. Her 6 older brothers protect her while trying to reign her sarcastic energy in, but also don't miss a chance to tease her. Until Shiori's curiosity gets the best of her with drastic consequences: a curse that leaves her unfamiliar to anyone, and threatening the lives of her brothers.

What I Loved:
Despite having a "then this happened" type of narrative, this book knows how to keep you wanting more. The pacing of the novel knows when to take it slow, describe a setting, culture, story, or development, but also has the best ways of integrating captivating and well blocked action scenes.

What I Missed:
I hate love triangles, and this book hints that the sequel will have one. Both romantic interests are good characters and are different from one another, they both want to see her succeed and will do anything to help her, but there it is an overused romance tope that I think distracts from the plot. I LOVED it. I didn't want it to end!!! I hope there will be a second. This book will certainly be going on my physical bookshelf very soon. (Read originally on Kindle) ( )

I absolutely loved this story, it was filled with adventure, unexpected outcomes and sorrow.
Shiori a care-free princess with a tenancy to do as she pleases finds herself cursed along with her brothers.
Six Crimson Cranes follows Shiori in her quest to find her brothers and the cure to break their curse. Along the way she meets Takkan and forms an unlikely bond with him.
As I read this book I fell into Shiori's world, I was frustrated with every obstacle that stood in her way and was outraged when the person I knew was "evil" was prancing around without getting caught.
I did find one thing odd but can not say what as its a major spoiler, but I'm sat here thinking "eh?!" I read it as it was a lie to keep Shiori from telling but Raikama confirmed it was true - though nothing came of it. It confused me no end!
I really felt invested in this novel, I was rooting for Shiori and loved Kiki.
I loved that ending and has left me with the need to read the second book ( )

This review is also featured on Behind the Pages: Six Crimson Cranes

Princess Shiori has been gifted with the power of magic, a power forbidden in her lands. But that does not stop her from using it when she believes no one is watching. Until Shiori decides to spy on her stepmother, Raikama and discovers she isn’t the only one with magic. Raikama curses Shiori, locks away her magic and turns her six brothers into cranes. And if Shiori dares to speak, each word will kill a brother. Cast out from her home, Shiori must find her brothers and discover a way to break their curses.

With her magic kept under lock and key from her stepmother’s curse, Shiori learns the harsh realities of the world. No longer the spoiled princess, she toils night and day, learning how to survive. The amount of character development she goes through is astonishing. It also adds to her awareness of how differently people are treated based on their appearances. The very thing she once did. Watching a spoiled princess become a clever and resourceful woman was quite the read.

My favorite character, Shiori’s paper crane Kiki, was a delight. The small paper bird was a steadfast companion and a wonderful friend. Shiori could turn to Kiki whenever despair began to overshadow hope. And despite her small size, Kiki was quick to nip at any foe threatening Shiori. Not to mention her attitude and witty banter helped move the story along when a lighter touch was needed. Kiki was exactly the character to keep the story flowing, trying to keep Shiori on task and encouraging her to do better.

The way Elizabeth Lim builds the world and twists the plot right underneath readers was amazing. I never saw what was around the corner as the story unfolded. And this is just the beginning. While Six Crimson Cranes introduces readers to a world filled with Asian inspired myth and magic, there is so much more left to discover. And with the way this book ends readers will be eagerly awaiting book two. I know I am. A book for those who enjoy stories with a folklore feel and Asian inspired mythology. ( )

The bottom of the lake tasted like mud, salt, and regret. The water was so thick it was agony keeping my eyes open, but thank the great gods I did. Otherwise, I would have missed the dragon.
