After no one believes Andy about the incident, Andy takes it upon himself to investigate and discovers that the local college student has not been killed and that the potential killer is a math professor who teaches with his father. Avi succeeds in hooking the reader in the first few sentences of the book. The reader learns that Andy, the protagonist, receives a phone call and the voice on the other end claims that he has just killed someone. Immediately the reader is drawn in and wants to know who this voice is and why he is calling Andy. Suspense builds throughout this mystery thriller as Andy tries to uncover who the man is behind the voice after the police, his father, and the school counselor do not appreciate the seriousness or plausibility of Andy's story. The plot moves quickly and will appeal to young adult readers looking for an enjoyable book full of suspense. Young adult readers will be able to relate to Andy's situation, as he is not taken seriously and struggles with doing the right thing, as he wants to protect the young woman but does not want to hurt his father. This book was on a middle school summer reading list. Not what I usually expect from Avi. Awfully dark. It is like a beginning thriller novel for teens. Not too scary, but still pretty intense. The writing does keep you engaged so you can see what is going to happen. The reality factor seems a little low and it is frustrating that his dad and the police are so unwilling to take him seriously.
