Originally published in 1938, and then revised (by the author herself) for this 1990 edition, Orlando the Marmalade Cat: A Camping Holiday was the first of nineteen picture-books featuring Orlando and his family - a series that is apparently considered something of an institution, over there in the UK (and environs - thanks for recommending this one, DG!). Marmalade Orlando and his family - wife Grace (a tabby), kittens Pansy (a tortoiseshell), Blanche (snowy white) and Tinkle (coal black) - decide to go on vacation, opting for a camping holiday in the country when the "Master" approves of the plan. Many amusing adventures, from learning to fish in the nearby stream, to disguising themselves as caterpillars in order to evade a local sheep-herding dog, ensue. A huge book - reproduced in the original folio size in this reprint - A Camping Holiday reminded me of a number of other vintage picture-book classics, both in its production values and aesthetic sensibility, and in its themes and story-line. The felines here wear clothing (more or less), and do human things, calling to mind the "elephants" of Jean de Brunhoff's Babar books, while the size of the book and style of the illustrations distinctly reminded me of some of the D'Aulaires' work. There's no doubt that this has a very old-fashioned sensibility (the fact that the cats' human is called "The Master," to begin with), but it also has undeniable charm! Definitely one I am glad I read... I'll be looking for more about Orlando and family! Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya

With their distinctive illustrations and witty stories, Kathleen Hale's classic tales of Orlando the Marmalade Catare as enchanting now as when first published over 70 years ago. In this, the very first book, Orlando, his wife Grace and their kittens Blanche, Pansy and Tinkle head off to the country for a fun-filled camping adventure . . .
