NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER â?¢ NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER â?¢ From one of Americaâ??s iconic writers, a stunning book of electric honesty and passion that explores an intensely personal yet universal experience: a portrait of a marriageâ??and a life, in good times and badâ??that will speak to anyone who has ever loved a husband or wife or child.

Several days before Christmas 2003, John Gregory Dunne and Joan Didion saw their only daughter, Quintana, fall ill with what seemed at first flu, then pneumonia, then complete septic shock. She was put into an induced coma and placed on life support. Days laterâ??the night before New Yearâ??s Eveâ??the Dunnes were just sitting down to dinner after visiting the hospital when John Gregory Dunne suffered a massive and fatal coronary. In a second, this close, symbiotic partnership of forty years was over. Four weeks later, their daughter pulled through. Two months after that, arriving at LAX, she collapsed and underwent six hours of brain surgery at UCLA Medical Center to relieve a massive hematoma.

This powerful book is Didionâ?? s attempt to make sense of the â??weeks and then months that cut loose any fixed idea I ever had about death, about illness ... about marriage and children and memory ... about the shallowness of sanity, about life it

Wow! What a moving book. Such raw honesty, heartfelt, and detailed. I cried when I finished the book. Definitely, death is not a subject I would chose to read, I only picked this book up on the author's merit, but glad I did. I took note of Didion saying that grief and mourning is a mental illness; and the loss of cognitive abilities in these circumstances as being common. Reading about Didion's loss, and describing her own reactions helps enormously in understanding my own reactions. Thanks JD, for sharing this personal autobiography. ( )

Maybe my expectations were too high. Maybe because I haven't experience any major unexpected losses in my life, I was totally underwhelmed by this book. I listened to the audio version. ( )

Having been forced inside over the last 72 hours from a particularly heavy snowstorm I decided to dive into Didion's accounts of grief/loss for some perspective. This was deeply addicting to read, as most death memoirs are, and the moments when Didion shifts to a clinical analysis of the nature of grief/mourning are cutting and revelatory. I wasn't surprised to see many on here taking issue with the name-dropping or inadvertent flexing that was going on in the more mundane parts of her account - it can be a bit disengaging and alienating, but the facts are the facts. There also is something to the equalizing force of loss transcending social order.

I will be reading "Blue Nights" sometime soon, and can plainly see why Didion was such a literary force. ( )

I listened to the audible production of this by Vanessa Redgrave and it was clearly an abridged version. Sounds like they took out most of the parts people have been finding annoying and kept the beautiful and mesmerizing parts! I will now take the time to compare the written version. But wow, what I heard really captured the complexities and contradictions. ( )

Essayistic and concise, seeking external points of comparison, trying to set her case in some wider context.

The book is, as promised, extraordinary. The Year of Magical Thinking is raw, brutal, compact, precise, immediate, literate, and, given the subject matter, astonishingly readable.

Though the material is literally terrible, the writing is exhilarating and what unfolds resembles an adventure narrative: a forced expedition into those "cliffs of fall" identified by Hopkins.

The Year of Magical Thinking , though it spares nothing in describing Didion's confusion, grief and derangement, is a work of surpassing clarity and honesty. It may not provide "meaning" to her husband's death or her daughter's illness, but it describes their effects on her with unsparing candor. It was not written as a self-help handbook for the bereaved but as a journey into a place that none of us can fully imagine until we have been there.

I remember thinking that I needed to discuss this with John.
Confronted with sudden disaster we all focus on how unremarkable the circumstances were in which the unthinkable occurred, the clear blue sky from which the plane fell, the routine errand that ended on the shoulder with the car in flames.
