One of the greatest heroes from Marvel--and myth--returns as Thor battles the mightiest of the giants in a fight to the death. The first book in an action-packed trilogy, Dueling with Giants is a story of epic combat from start to finish, sure to entertain fans of Marvel comics and adventure novels alike. During just another day for the God of Thunder, Thor is defending Asgard against invading trolls when the unthinkable happens--his hammer, Mjolnir, loses its enchantment, depleting Thor's strength. Thor is still more than a match for his enemies; after vanquishing them, he learns the secret to his sudden weakness: Mjolnir has been switched! And only one being is cunning enough to carry out such a trick: Thor's own adopted brother, Loki. As punishment, Odin imprisons Loki for a year, but the trickster soon takes on other forms and escapes his imprisonment. He provokes a dispute between Odin and the giant Hrungnir--one that soon brings a full-scale attack on Asgard and a one-on-one challenge to Thor himself. Dueling with Giants will be followed by two more riveting installments featuring Sif and the Warriors Three, all written by Marvel veteran and popular fantasy author Keith R.A. DeCandido. The Tales of Asgard Trilogy will be an adventure that Marvel readers won't soon forget.… (més)

I'm not sure if this is a new universe of Thor/Marvel, or if it's a combo of the other universes (like the Comic one/MCU one etc?) But, no matter what universes it was, it was pretty cool. I mean, I shouldn't be surprised since I've rarely not liked something that DeCandido has written, but, you never know with these adaptations.

This is the first book in what I guess will be a series, and it's of course, Thor's book. Or, more specifically it's very much Thor and Loki's book. Thor and the rest of the heroes of Asgard go up against a few different threats. Dwarves, as well as Frost Giants. And Thor definitely has quite a big fight.

The fights were one of the things that I didn't like as much in the story. A lot of them seemed to drag on and on. The final Thor one was the exception, but a lot of them before that final fight just seemed to go on forever.

On the other hand I loved the characters. DeCandido really seemed to understand who each and every one of the characters were/are. From the Warriors Three, to Sif, and especially Loki. Loki has been portrayed wrong so many times, but here his evil/mischief balance is perfect.

I got this advanced galley through Netgalley on behalf of Joe Books via Diamond Book Distributors. ( )

I’m a huge Marvel fan, but also love mythology. After reading Joanna Harris’ excellent “The Gospel of Loki” I went looking for more Norse inspired novels and this one from Marvel popped up. It’s Young Adult fiction (which to me means anyone who can read is welcome), but geared a bit younger than the more common dystopian YA fiction currently prevalent.

The story combines elements from the Marvel Universe with the original myths. Loki is an adopted son of Odin (comics), rather than his blood brother (myths), but readers also get Thor’s brother Baldur taking part. The story is original in that it isn’t based on any particular aspect of the myth or comics, but it very simple to satisfy a younger audience, and quite honestly, me. After Loki sneaks some trolls into Asgard, he’s “grounded” by Odin. What seems like a light punishment quickly becomes unbearable for the god of mischief, and he promptly sneaks out to cause further trouble involving the giant Hrungir.

The characters are significantly toned down, but still true to the familiar personalities. Loki is more mischievous than evil, and Odin more wise than he’s usually portrayed. The story was fun, with lots of action. It was a quick read for an adult, but enjoyable none-the-less. I look forward to the next installment and intend to buy copies for my young niece and nephew (the target audience) as well. Highly recommended. ( )
