It was okay but for my taste, it was too slow. ( )

This book is really good for what it sets out to be: A YA novel by the author of The Fault In Your Stars. So if you liked that book, you'll probably like this one. As a matter of fact, I think I liked it more. ( )

Loved the explaination of the different relationships at the end but beyond that I found this one hard to connect with and follow. Felt a bit disjointed to me, though I suppose that matches the character a bit. I feel it may have worked better in first person. Just wan't for me. Would still recommend it to anyone who loves math and John Green tho of course! ( )

So, preface. I admire and respect John-Green-the-public-person a lot. He's one of the genuinely nicest features of the new media / youtube thing, one who sorta accidentally wound up basically a big brother to half the internet and (even more astoundingly) managed NOT to fail at that. He's way cool.

All that said, I've never felt so painfully "too old" for anyone's novels as I do reading Green. That's cool, that's kind of the way it's supposed to be, he's writing for young adults specifically... but as I age, that kind of laser-focus shows more and more. Or maybe I just didn't like this one book that much, and I'm overgeneralizing.

Looking for Alaska left me in angry tears when I read it at the start of my twenties. A decade later, this one mostly left me glad I'm old and independently self-absorbed rather than young and pathetically self-absorbed. I did like it, don't get me wrong, but holy heck that first half just made me want the main character to grow up and get over it already. Thankfully, by the end of the book he does, and there's even a few decent moments of friends being friends along the way, sandwiched between all the teenage ego and pathos.

Still, if I wanted to share a John Green book with someone, it would definitely be The Fault in Our Stars instead. ( )

I like John Green books, but this one was kind of just meh for me.

What I did like was the cute Penguin Mini format and the fun footnotes.

What I did not like:
* I couldn't get interested in any of the characters or the story.
* The way the characters constantly said "fug" instead of the actual F word was annoying as f*&k,
which I would spell out but I don't know if GR allows it.
* Too much math. ( )

Colin had always preferred baths; one of his general policies in life was never to do anything standing up that could just as easily be done lying down.
—pg. 3
But mothers lie. It’s in the job description.
—pg. 4
Crying adds something: crying is you, plus tears. But the feeling Colin had was some horrible opposite of crying. It was you, minus something.
—pg. 7
Prodigies can very quickly learn what other people have already figured out; geniuses discover that which no one has ever previously discovered. Prodigies learn; geniuses do.
