The third volume in the US army’s Mediterranean series. We begin with the confused Salerno landing, and Blumenson is quite sure that the help by the British eighth army was seriously delayed by Montgomery. Still, eventually the US bridgehead was relieved and the reader is carried forward to the fighting around Monte Cassino. The mishandled landing at Anzio is treated in depth. Blumenson is a good writer, and his descriptions are clear. The maps are adequate and the photos well chosen. ( )
