Joanne Froggatt (of Downton Abbey fame) was perfect for reading this book and Lisa Jewell is so good! If I had ambitions of being a mystery author, I would study this book for the way she arcs the suspense and keeps the reader guessing and wanting more. As a reader, I found myself at the end wanting to go back and reread certain parts to see details that I hadn't quite picked up on the first time around. ( )

The Short of It:

Jewel does it again. I love her books and every time I picked this one up I was immensely happy to do so.

The Rest of It:

Tallulah and Zach are young parents. Only nineteen with their entire lives ahead of them, but they are both trying to do right by their young son so they live with Tallulah’s mom. While Zach works to create a nest egg for them, Tallulah attends her college courses hoping to one day be a social worker but the lure of someone from her past, the unpredictable Scarlett, surrounded by her wealth and her crowd of followers is too much for Tallulah. She finds herself fascinated by Scarlett and then one day, when Zach and Tallulah head to Scarlett’s place after some drinks at the pub, something goes terribly wrong and the two disappear.

This was a great, suspenseful read. The story of Tallulah and Zach’s disappearance keeps you guessing. Scarlett’s backstory and the other people involved, including a young couple living on the school grounds who take an interest in the case, given that one of them writes detective stories for a living, really added to the complexity of the story.

Recommend. It’s not high lit fiction but it was good, and juicy and and I enjoyed it a lot.

I like Lisa Jewell's books but I notice that there's something vaguely depressing (to me) about the stories, or maybe the setting. There's kind of a stuck-ness that people struggle to overcome, and it doesn't usually lead them to the best places. That's definitely the case here with a teenage mom and her controlling boyfriend in one storyline, and a restless mystery writer feeling bored with her new rural surroundings in the other. Jewell does bring the 2 together, but I would preferred a book focused on either one or the other. I definitely would have enjoyed a closer examination of the relationships between Tallulah and Scarlett. More of a dark academia storyline for Sophie also could have worked well. So for me this was entertaining but not a must-read.

A thriller that kept me guessing till the very end. Very twisty, dark, and unsettling. Sophie and her boyfriend move into the headmasters cottage at a boarding school where he just landed a job, and things are off on a great start. There is one weird thing though - a small sign with an arrow pointing in the dirt that says "dig here." When Sophie finally caves and digs it up - what she found is linked to a bizarre missing person case from one year prior. Nineteen year old Tallulah and her boyfriend went to the pub and then a friend's house and were never seen again. Her mother knows they would never run off - they have a baby at home, a baby they love! Told in alternating timelines - one from the year leading up to the disappearance and the other a year after the disappearance. So many dropped tid bits will have readers leaning one way and then the other. Impossible to put down! ( )

Lisa Jewell’s books synopses have often caught my interest, an appealing mix of psychological drama and mystery, but The Night She Disappeared is the first of her novels I have actually had the chance to read. My expectations were high…

Telling a story from multiple time points and switching character perspectives, a writing technique that builds tension and suspense by design, is one I always enjoy reading. Then pick a setting with multiple claustrophobic elements – small village, young motherhood, exclusive boarding school, and a luxurious historical house in the woods – insert an amateur sleuth (who is an author no less) and explore a highly topical issue such as ‘coercive control’ from multiple angles. Sounds like a recipe for success, right?

In The Night She Disappeared Jewell cultivates psychological intrigue with her multiple character viewpoint narrative and offers readers more than one empathetic character and a story told in highly accessible prose. However, this novel is not without its weaknesses. Continue reading >> https://www.bookloverbookreviews.com/2021/09/the-night-she-disappeared-by-lisa-j... ( )
