It has always been my favorite. "The Shadow of the Strongman" did not disappoint. Martin Luis Guzman weaves a fascinating, if at times violent, portrait of Mexican politics in the early 1920's. Based on his personal participation in the historical events, he presents a fast-paced story that none-the-less reveals the sad, complex, and moving political events of the times. But the story is much more than history; it is an eloquent, personal and skilled portrayal of the principle actors of the times. Even if a reader lacks a knowledge of, or in fact an interest in, the events of those times, it is a worthwhile and enjoyable investment of time.

"La sombra del Caudillo was first published in 1929 in Spain where Guzman had fled in 1923 and settled to avoid the wrath of Obregon and called for supporting Adolfo de la Huerta's candidacy for president. With this publication of The Shadow of the Strongman, English-language readers have access for the first time to an important document of Mexican twentieth-century culture, a novel of political intrigue that has gripped generations of Mexican and other Spanish-language readers."-- No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
