Svérázná sbírka krátkých textů Obecné dějiny hanebnosti z roku 1935 přináší záznamy "z dějin" mravně pokleslých skutků, kterých se dopustili různí lidé v různých a dobách a zemích, nikoli však ti, o nichž se běžně říká, že tvořili dějiny. Borges totiž sepisuje historii hanebností výlučně s přihlédnutím k lopotivému padoušství naoko bezvýznamných individuí, jejichž motivací kromě hamižnosti či slavomamu byla zbabělost, krutost, licoměrnost či úplná duchovní vyprázdněnost. Morální hledisko přitom ponechává zdánlivě stranou: odsouzeníhodné jednání gangsterů, desperátů, podvodníků a zlodějů se v autorově ironizujícím podání mění ve zdroj pobavení.
