The book achieved what it was trying to do. It wasn't particularly original or sophisticated or anything.
The book was incredibly easy to read.
Books like this are like comfort food to me. I've eaten it countless times and if I eat it too frequently or too much of it, it sours my enjoyment but every now and then it's just nice.
It was entirely predictable, even including the ending.
The only thing I didn't predict was how abysmally bad the ending was executed.

Oh, that ending was so incredibly stupid. It's completely out of character for all the protagonists. It's clearly just bait for the second book and so cheap it made me furious.
I've seen this regularly but I've rarely seen it done as artless and cheap as it is here.

I am not even against unexpected heartbreak or rejection like that even if it's a huge cliffhanger. It can hurt so good if done right especially if it is a cliffhanger. But it has to make sense. At least a little. It doesn't in this case.
