There's an explosion at a concert venue just as the band is leaving the stage. Security firm owner and Army veteran, Dustin Webb, is accused of causing the explosion. He insists he's innocent and hires his childhood best friend, Jamie, to defend him. Even though they haven't spoken for years, she never questions his innocence, but will she be able to prove it?

I have been a fan of Terri Blackstock's for a while and as usual this book doesn't disappoint. It has revenge, which is something you would expect after such a traumatic event, it has some sweet romance, but nothing too over the top. It also has some closure and understanding, which being a Christian suspense novel, gives some peace to the reader. I would give this book a solid four stars and recommend it to anyone that likes suspense and doesn't mind a bit of Christianity mixed in.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest review. ( )

Title: Aftermath
Author: Terri Blackstock
Pages: 336

Publisher: Thomas Nelson
My rating is 4 out of 5 stars.
Taylor Reid went out with her two best friends to hear their favorite musical group play at a political rally. They aren’t interested in the politician, just in having a good time. She never thought that before the night was over, her life would be turned upside down. She has battled OCD but has been managing it. In the aftermath of tonight, that issue will come to the forefront. She seeks justice and will go to extreme lengths to achieve it.
Dustin Webb is an Army veteran who owns his own business with a former Army buddy, Travis. He has had some troubles in the past, beginning with his aunt. She took him in when his parents were killed. Dustin wasn’t like her own children and the two of them clashed constantly. She still barely tolerates him. His only real friend growing up was a young girl, Jamie, who lived next door. They have since fallen out of touch. He has been arrested on false charges according to him, but the authorities have physical proof of his guilt. He calls the only person he can think of who can help him…Jamie.
Jamie Powell is a defense attorney. When she receives the call from Dustin, her thoughts turn to the past and how he always protected her and was there for her. She immediately accepts his case. She is able to get Dustin released into her custody and the race is on to discover who framed him and why. Along the way, she discovers that Dustin has always had romantic feelings for her but stepped aside as she married another man. Now, as Jamie spends time getting reacquainted with Dustin, she discovers her own budding feelings for him. The court of public opinion already has him tried and convicted. Can she discover the truth before he is sent to prison?
There is plenty of non-stop action and suspense in this novel. The story is told from the point of view of four characters. The chapters are short, keeping the reading at a quick pace. The plot is fairly predictable, but I still enjoyed experiencing the thrills of getting to the end. The author shows readers the different ways some might react to a terrible event. I would have liked to see more faith evident in the lives of the characters and their dependence on God.

In Aftermath, author Terri Blackstock transports the reader to Atlanta, Georgia for an intriguing Romantic Suspense story that follows four people who are interconnected by the traumatic after-effect of an unexpected terrorist bombing at a political rally.

Taylor Reed and best friends Desiree and Mara attend the political rally for US Presidential Candidate - Libertarian Ed Loran featuring a concert by the band Blue Fire. As the concert ends and Candidate Loran enters the stage, an explosion goes off from the stage. Taylor is the sole survivor of the three friends, and the bomb explosion killed a total of twenty-six people, including the presidential candidate.

Dustin Webb is a veteran of the Army Ordnance Corps and co-owns GreyWebb Securities, a designer and installer of commercial security systems with Travis Grey, his best friend from the Army. An anonymous tip targets Dustin as carrying boxes of explosives in his trunk tied to a recent theft at ChemEx, an ammunition plant inwhich GreyWebb had installed a company security system. Dustin is arrested under suspicion of the theft and involvement in the political rally bombing.

Jamie Powell is a criminal defense attorney and Dustin's childhood friend. Dustin calls Jamie and asks her to represent him on the charges of felony possession of explosives and terrorism. Dustin claims that he is innocent and being set up, Jamie is determined to prove Dustin's innocence, and find the person responsible for the bombing.

Travis Grey is Dustin's best friend and business partner in WebbGrey Securities. They served together in the Army Ordnance Corps. Travis has been at his wife Crystal's bedside at the hospital as she battles terminal cancer, and has been hoping that the new Leukemia treatment will help her recover.

Aftermath follows the unexpected and traumatic inter-connection between Taylor, Dustin, Jamie and Travis, and how each of them deals with the aftermath from the terrrorist bombing at the political rally. A survivor, a wrongfully charged man, a childhood friend and defense attorney, and a business partner dealing with a family medical issue ... each struggles with the trauma and determination to find the person responsible for the bombing and getting justice.

Author Terri Blackstock weaves a multi-layered and suspenseful tale written in the third person alternating narrative that easily draws the reader into this well written story. The richly descriptive plot will keep the reader guessing as survivor guilt, secrets, deceit, betrayal, unwavering friendship, and heartbreaking family drama, and unexpected twists and turns are uncovered. I loved the intertwining of the four characters' individual perspectives, and how their struggles leads them to search for justice after the traumatic devastation felt throughout Atlanta.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention how much I enjoyed the backstory of Dustin and Jamie's childhood friendship, and the touch of Christian faith that is interspersed throughout the story.

Aftermath is a fast-paced and riveting suspense story that will take the reader on one heck of a thrilling roller coaster ride.

Sometimes I forget how great Blackstock's work is! "Aftermath," her newest thriller, brought back the reasons I love falling into an engrossing read--great characters, fast moving plots and a commitment to relatable faith journeys.

Blackstock delivers a relevant, current story of Jamie, a lawyer who ends up near the scene of a recent bombing, unaware of the connection she has with the man accused of the crime, her childhood friend Dustin. As Dustin tries to unravel the mess he's now in, Jamie must evaluate if she is the right person to help someone who she considered a friend. Can Dustin be trusted? Could she find a way to clear his name?

What began as Taylor and her friends attending a concert turned into a living nightmare when the explosion happened. Reeling from the loss of her friends and the trauma that followed, Taylor decides it's up to her to right the wrongs and begins her own search for the killers. Taylor also deals with the additional challenge of OCD, which I appreciated seeing in a novel. It's nice to see a diagnosis that is often misunderstood expanded on for the sake of educating readers.

Blackstock leaves the reader wanting more, so I hope this *might* become a series? The characters are well developed and relatable. The plot was thought out and resolved by the end of the book, which I appreciate.

I was an early reader, thanks to Thomas Nelson publishers and #NetGalley. All opinions are my own. ( )

This was a very quick read for me, I just couldn’t put it down!
From the first scene it was mesmerizing. After the *incident*, the story is told from several points of view: Taylor, who was a witness; Dustin, the accused; and Jaime, who is a defending attorney. The connection to the culprit was intricately woven into the plot. I especially liked the reunion between Jaime and Dustin who grew up next door to each other. The health issues of PTSD, OCD and cancer were very well represented and realistic. The story dealt with family, reconciliation and how faith affects our circumstances. It was great to see the growth that Dustin experienced throughout the story. “ The sure knowledge that God had his back filled him with strength laced with calm. He would fight this, but wouldn’t be fighting alone.”
Ms. Blackstock has proved herself again as a wonderful suspense author. One of my favorite writers.
