Fantasy. Historical Fiction. Young Adult Fiction. HTML:

My kingdom for a magician!

The year is 1812, and Mr Albert Lowe is the only soldier in his regiment with a decent pair of boots. As the English withdraw to Portugal for the winter, a dark pall lies upon the troops, who cannot seem to decide which will kill them first??the lack of supplies, the bitter winter weather, or Napoleon's dread Lord Sorcier. The lack of ammunition does seem pressing??but what are muskets to the French when they have on their side a magician capable of summoning up a hurricane?

As a surgeon, Albert can fix gunshot wounds more readily than hurricanes. But when he discovers by chance a peculiar, low-born magician among the English ranks, Albert begins to hope that they may all yet survive to return home… (més)

17/2021. This is a freebie prequel novella to Atwater's Regency Faerie Tales series.

One of the reasons I read very little "historical" fiction is because much of it fails to give even a passing nod to historical realism, and this is exactly why "historical" fantasy tends to appeal to me: throw any semblance of authenticity in the bin and bring on the magic! This novella, for example, reads more like a simplistic version of Discworld than a Napoleonic war novel and that's fine by me.

Quotes

Brexit: “It is not so strange for human beings to search for an easy villain to blame for all their troubles,” Albert told him. “We often lie to ourselves every bit as much as we lie to each other, in order to feel some comfort in hard times.” He paused. “Do not mistake me — the French are a danger to everything we hold dear. But their defeat will not solve every English woe overnight.”

Extremely brexit: “I asked why the workhouses were so terrible, Mr Lowe,” he said. “I was told that it was all to do with the taxes, and the war, and the evil French behind it all. But even if I killed the Lord Sorcier himself tomorrow, none of it would change, would it? The French are not evil. That was a lie. I am not sure that I can see the point in all of this now.”

But is he seedy: "Lord Carroway's son".

Like any good English army man, Albert preferred to avoid complaining.
