Not an easy read, but well worth it!I spent a lot of time looking at maps and looking up locations on the internet while reading this.

Not only is the history fascinating, but the story is compelling.
I'm afraid I actually was teary reading of the events immediatly leading up to the Battle of Bannockburn! ( )

I have read this book repeatedly since I was about 15 and have never tired of it. I'm aware that Tranter has played fast & loose with history and Bruce was never quite the heroic figure presented here, rather a cunning and manipulative individual who switched sides frequently to gain maximum advantage in the quest for the crown. Doesnt matter, this is just a superb piece of historical fiction.. My favourite part is the thundering speech Bruce delivers to the noble English captives after Bannockburn at the climax of Book 2, its one of the most stirring speeches I've ever read and I can never read it with my spine tingling. Anyone who's even remotely interested in Scottish history and anyone who simply loves good historical fiction MUST read this - its beyond superb. ( )

I bought this in Scotland about 5 years ago. if you are into Scot history, Nigel Tranter is the man. He does get a little dry at times, but the characters are interesting, the conflicts historical and exciting. He provides very detailed descriptions of the Scottish landscape, and I think he goes a little too far sometimes. ( )
