So far read four stories:
-- Ten Things You Should Know Before Crossing Yourself with a Lobster So You Can Live Forever by Thomas K Carpenter 2* Author notes: I recently read an article about the supposed immortality of lobsters, eventually foiled by their inability to escape their shells when they grew too large. This led me to wonder about what might happen if it were a human-lobster hybrid.
-- Moving Day by Rich Larson - 1* ... "It's lucky we ran the tests," I say. " never would have expected it. You know, a sapient mushroom. It makes you wonder. About...." I trail off, looking out at the rest of the forest. "All of it."
Ripa follows my gaze. "The other fungi?" she asks, misinterpreting my existential unease. "We ran the tests. They average out to a four-point-four on the Yang-Trudel."
I blink. "Four-point-four?" I echo, remembering back to my briefing. "Ripa, that's a dog. A dog is four-point-four."
She gives me a sad kind of smile. "I know. But we have to draw the line somewhere, don't we?"
I imagine the balance: oxygen for a million desperate colonists who were promised a new home versus a forest of fungi that can feel, think, remember. It's already been signed off on.
"We do," I say. "I guess we do."
Down below, the drone's enormous saw roars to life.
-- Thrifting with the Snow Queen by M. J. Pettit - 4* That was a great bit of flash fiction. We meet and older couple doing their weekend tag-saleing but we learn they are looking for a particular supernatural item. A portal which will get them back to their old lives.
-- Prophecy by Jessica Jo Horowitz - 4* A Hero decides to interpret the prophecy differently. If all the 18 year old "at the fullness of adulthood" heroes died before the adversary, he decided to interrupt "at the fullness of adulthood" differently. The ending is sweet.
-- Ten Things You Should Know Before Crossing Yourself with a Lobster So You Can Live Forever by Thomas K Carpenter 2*
