CHOPS is designed to update the pedagogical materials available to the modern saxophonist. As a new instrument and one which has only a few generations of pedagogy, the exponential growth in ability achieved in a technical and fundamental sense by recent saxophonists demands a work that further challenges all aspects of playing. This book takes the saxophonist through all fundamental areas and suggests a means of incorporating the wealth of material into a coherent daily routine. Beginning with long tone work, the student is taken through dynamic control and stability exercises through all registers in a variety of groupings. Timbre matching between registers is added to blend the extreme low and altissimo registers of the saxophone with the more comfortable middle 2 octaves. This section ends with suggested tuning practice and vibrato mechanism control. The Mechanism exercises provided in the next chapter deal with chromatic technique, single-hand dexterity, low register facility, as well as Palm and Front Key transitions to the altissimo register. To conclude this section, 5-note diatonic figures take the saxophonist, in varying patterns, through the entire range. The Voicing chapter offers new exercises fashioned in melodic overtone patterns, scales, range extensions, as well as suggestions for pitch-bend work in the upper register and on the mouthpiece alone. To connect the melodic and long-tone practice already mentioned to further technical study, a chapter of vocalises is included to bridge this gap. Though listed rhythmically and frequently technical in nature, the focus here should be on homogeneity of sound and expression through the technique. Preliminarily they can be studied with a metronome, however the greatest benefit will be found when practiced with rubato and expansion of time. Articulation is discussed in single, double, and triple tongue fashion through the altissimo register. Scales, scale patterns, arpeggios, and interval work through the modern range of the saxophone follow this chapter and form a complete update of many previous methods. Finally, the student is given cool down exercises to refocus and prepare the mind and the chops for the next day's work in the best possible fashion. No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
