The Paris Betrayal by James Hannibal is a stellar twist and turns novel. I love suspense. I love mystery. I love thrillers. And I really really love international spy stories. It has been a long time since I read a spy story that had me up into the wee hours because it was so gripping I just couldn't put it down. Poor Ben Calix has had his world turned upside down and inside out with nowhere to turn and no one to trust (think Job). Even his own agency has a price on his head. Now he is on the run to clear his name, keep someone safe, and live to tell about it. When I finished I immediately ordered another of his books. It was clean with no foul language which was refreshing. Even a good spy book does not have to have bad words. You will not be disappointed. I was given a complimentary copy but was not required to give a favorable review. My thought are my own. ( )

The Paris Betrayal by James R. Hannibal is a stand-alone modern-day suspense novel. Ben Calix has been abandoned by his covert agency. Now on his own without all his fancy resources he must try to stop a bio attack. This story starts off with a bang in Rome and moves to the beautiful city of Paris. It’s a non-stop, James Bond kind of story. Never knowing who you can trust made each new person in the story a potential liability. Without the resources you need, how are you to save the world? I really enjoy Mr. Hannibal’s ability to weave an intriguing tale without becoming just another action story! If you love heart-pounding, edge-of-your-seat suspense then pick up a copy of The Paris Betrayal. You won’t be disappointed!

I received this book from the author for my honest review. ( )

Action, danger, and intrigue begin in the first pages and they never let up in this thrilling suspense novel by James R. Hannibal. Ben Calix is a spy, and he is totally dedicated to serving, but he soon learns that giving your all may not be enough. Ben is exposed to a deadly virus, and the descriptions of his symptoms hit very close to home! Hannibal shares in his author notes that this manuscript was 85 per cent completed when Covid 19 entered our world. Along with a deadly illness, Ben also faces being labeled incompetent and being banned for severance. It appears that everything and everyone has turned against him, including his own Director.

"You volunteered." The Director drew in the air with an imaginary pen. "You signed your life over to me, so I could create something new. And for my part, I housed you. I fed you. I trained you. I made you, son. And I can unmake you at my pleasure."

I don't often read spy thrillers but this book grabbed my attention from the get-go with its fascinating characters and unpredictable plot. Hannibal throws several curve balls in The Paris Betrayal, and he definitely gives readers a wild ride!

I received a copy of this book from Revell. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts. ( )

What a thrilling ride! This book is exciting from beginning to end. I liked how the action kept the plot moving and didn’t slow down one bit. The book definitely held my attention and I had a hard time putting it down. I found Ben an easy character to like and I enjoyed reading the book from his perspective. The dialogue and characters’ interactions felt natural and were well woven among the action. There were some twists that I did not expect and I found myself surprised by more than one part of the story. I enjoyed this novel and look forward to more by this author!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell Publishing. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own. ( )

This book is right up my reading alley. I was feeling it right away in the beginning and was hooked for the first third of the story. This is not to say that the rest of the story was not good. It was and it was full of action and intensity. For some reason, I just struggled with fully being focused on this book.

When I think about it and I saw another reader's review, it clicked as to the reason why. Because I will tell you that I was puzzled. It is because there were so many different characters introduced very fast in a short amount of time. Therefore, it was kind of hard to keep everyone straight and develop any connections.

So I in turn was a bit lost and disconnected with the characters and some with the story. Other than this I did like this book and could see it playing out on the movie screen. ( )
