Andrea Tripke typically illustrates children’s books, but with Miranda, Queen of Broken Toys, readers are introduced to her debut as an author.

I love the subtle lessons sprinkled along the way. Children can learn from this enchanting children’s story.

The illustrations are winsome and full of deep, cheerful colors. Attention to detail in each drawing highlights a flawless tale of renewal and purpose.

Andrea Tripke takes a lonesome little girl and gives her and her broken toys a reason for existence while helping a little boy along the way.

Prepare for a wonderfully sweet and insightful adventure as you follow Queen Miranda in her Kingdom of Broken Toys.

I received this book from LibraryThing. However, I was under no obligation to write a review. ( )

The title already tells most of the story, but there where little details along the way that made this picture book worthwhile. The illustrations were colorful and expressive and also really cute. There are several messages that may be learned from this book, but thankfully they are given in a subtle and playful background way. Perfect for very young children, but also readers that are still a child at heart. ( )

What a beautiful book! I love children's books that have heroes who are original and self-believers rather than being like the rest of the kids without giving it any thought. Miranda is a very compassionate soul and collects broken toys rather than wanting the shiny new toys her friends have. Eventually, alas, familiar human traits begin to emerge in her friends as they shun her and call her "Miranda, Queen of Broken Toys". I like the fact that the girl who had been ridiculed became the fodder for bedtime stories. This is Tripke's first book; she has previously illustrated children's books and it shows. The illustrations! They are colorful and imaginative. The search for a boy's lost toy is hilarious. Miranda always wears blue and yellow but never the same outfit. What I loved was the change in perspective of the illustrations, especially the one looking down on Miranda's and Paul's horrified faces as a clutter of teapot, cups and sandwiches descends on them. My only criticism is that the book seemed to end abruptly. I think the addition of just one more page could have fixed that. I do love the closing line, though - "But then, what is normal, anyway?" This was a cute story with soothing illustrations. It seemed like it was going to be a tale about self acceptance even when not fitting in, but ended up focusing more on making the best out of each situation. There is light humor and a few messy hijinks to keep kids entertained with an overall tone about resiliency and adjusting to unforeseeable events. ( )

The story is pretty discernible from the title. It's is about a little girl who takes in and loves old or broken toys, which makes her seem weird to other kids, but she makes it her own. The artwork is sketch-like, giving it warm and soft edges with vivid colors. Even though the message of the story was relatable and heartwarming, the plot didn't have any kind of big moments or twists that make it memorable. Loved the idea but not necessarily the execution.
