I love the dynamics between Jacks and Evangeline and I hope that Jacks isn’t the bad guy he’s looking like at the end of the book. Now I have to wait for the next book ( )

Evangeline Fox is a young woman in love with Luc, she truly feels that he loves her too until the day she comes to discover that he is to wed her step-sister. In order to stop this from happening, Evangeline makes a deal with the Prince of Hearts, more commonly known as Jacks. Jacks never agrees to help unless there is something in it for him. She asks Jacks to stop the wedding but when she disagrees with his way of granting her wish, she drinks a potion to turn her into stone as opposed to the wedding party. When she is saved, she is the area's newest hero.

Her title of hero catches the eye of the royal head of the country, she is asked to go to the North as a representative at the Nocte Neverending Festival, This festival begins on the first night of Winter and does not end until the prince has selected a wife. Evangeline sees this as a way to move her life forward and possibly have her happy ever after. By the second night, her life has changed and she must figure out what is going on and how to get everything back to how it should be.

Stephanie Garber is a wonder at storytelling. She develops such rich characters and lands that one cannot help but get pulled in. While this is not a continuation of the Caraval series it does have some of the same characters with a host of new ones. If you are looking to lose yourself in a great story in a land you'll never forget then this is the fantasy that you want to read. ( )

"Heroes don't get happy endings. They give them to other people."

I actually only read the Caraval series because I wanted to read this book (and understand the references/characters).

While I really liked the Caraval series (and Jacks), this book started out interesting and had a similar feel as the Caraval series, but it ended on a cliff hanger and left me with quite a few questions.

SIGH.

Now I wait for book 2. ( )

UGHHHHH!!!!!!!! I CAN'T BELIEVE I GOT TRICKED INTO READING ANOTHER FIRST BOOK IN A SERIES!!!!!!!!!!! I THOUGHT THIS WAS A STAND-ALONE BOOK AND WAS WONDERING HOW THEY WERE GOING TO RESOLVE ALL THE PLOT THREADS GOING ON AT 1 MINUTE AND 30 SECONDS LEFT TO GO IN THE BOOK.... THEY WEREN'T! SURPRISE, CLIFFHANGER! I'm sick.

Anyway, that being said... this book felt like such an unhinged, random assortment of fantasy trope events, I'm not even sure I liked it. Half the time it felt like this was supposed to be some sort of comedic parody of fairy tale stories, but the author forgot to insert all of the jokes before she finished up the story. I definitely raised an eyebrow once characters started showing up with names like "Kutlass Knightlinger," "LaLa Lagrimas," and "Princess Serendipity Skystead" started showing up. And the amount of detail used to describe every outfit that any character wore felt like I was reading American Psycho all over again. So much of this felt like it was balancing just on the edge of absurdity, but I don't know if it was intentional or not...

And Evangeline "You Know She's The Main Character Because She Has Rose Gold Hair And Everyone Else Has Normal Hair And Everyone Else Is Jealous Of Her Cool Hair" Fox? What a frustrating character to follow. Any time anyone provided Evangeline with information, she would unquestioningly take the information as fact and run with it, frequently making poor decisions rashly as a result. Then when someone else told her conflicting information, well, everyone else she spoke to must have been lying and now this NEW info is the truth, on an on and on ad nauseum. If a crime occurred, she would blame everyone she had met throughout the story one by one with little to no evidence. And I straight up don't even know who her true love interest is supposed to be in this story, she has no chemistry with ANYONE. Just... tell me something she DOES do successfully. Try it, you can't.

I dunno, perhaps this will all make more sense once things are resolved in the next book. And at least I was entertained through the whole book, even if I didn't know what was going on. THIS BETTER NOT END UP BEING A TRILOGY, THOUGH. ( )

Once upon a Broken Heart is set after the events of the Caraval trilogy, focusing on the Prince Of Hearts, Jacks who we met in Legendary and Evangeline Fox, a new character. While Scarlet and Tella appear briefly for a couple of pages, that is the biggest connection to caraval seen in this book.
Evangeline annoyed me at times for her naivety and stupidness, but I prefer her to the Dragna sisters.
The author didn't do any abstract writing which was an improvement from Caraval and Finale (for example, The world tasted like lies)
The book is very fast-paced but there are some large time gaps at the start, making it a little confusing at the start and taking a while to connect to the characters.

It is whimsical but in a different way to the Caraval trilogy. I saw the praise at the back from Keri Maniscalco and Bridget Kemmerer, one author I love, one author whose books are not my fave.

Overall, a good book ( )
