NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * REESE'S BOOK CLUB PICK * "This book is every suspense lover's dream and it kept me up way too late turning pages. . . . A novel with crazy twists and turns that will have you ditching your Friday night plans for more chapters."--Reese Witherspoon A backpacking trip has deadly consequences in this "eerie psychological thriller . . . with alluring locales, Hitchcockian tension, and possibly the best pair of female leads since Thelma and Louise" (BookPage), from the bestselling author of The Lost Night and The Herd. A Marie Claire Book Club Pick * Named One of the Most Anticipated Books of the Year by Oprah Daily, BuzzFeed, Reader's Digest, Men's Journal, and CrimeReads Emily is having the time of her life--she's in the mountains of Chile with her best friend, Kristen, on their annual reunion trip, and the women are feeling closer than ever. But on the last night of the trip, Emily enters their hotel suite to find blood and broken glass on the floor. Kristen says the cute backpacker she brought back to their room attacked her, and she had no choice but to kill him in self-defense. Even more shocking: The scene is horrifyingly similar to last year's trip, when another backpacker wound up dead. Emily can't believe it's happened again--can lightning really strike twice? Back home in Wisconsin, Emily struggles to bury her trauma, diving headfirst into a new relationship and throwing herself into work. But when Kristen shows up for a surprise visit, Emily is forced to confront their violent past. The more Kristen tries to keep Emily close, the more Emily questions her motives. As Emily feels the walls closing in on their cover-ups, she must reckon with the truth about her closest friend. Can Emily outrun the secrets she shares with Kristen, or will they destroy her relationship, her freedom--even her life?… (més)

This one pulls you in quickly, but I wish there were more answers at the end. This psychological thriller is about two best friends on vacation. It reminded me a lot of Who Is Maud Dixon? In both books there is travel, two women, and unreliable narrator, and a slow burn plot. ( )

This book was a fun read, and definitely a crazy train. I was kind of let down by the ending, though, which seemed to taper off into nothing. I’m also a little confused by the end- are things repeating themselves in a weird way? ( )

What could have been a good story is ruined by frequent feminist editorials. It's about as subtle as a parade of elephants. Ugh. ( )

Even though I'm not a suspense reader in general, the unreliable narrator showed up midway through the book (poor timing) and the ending felt contrived. The pacing sagged in the middle. I almost put this book down and did not finish, but I gave the book one more chapter and the pace raced through again. ( )

I had a bit of trouble getting into the book then had trouble putting it down. Emily and Kristen are best friends. They enjoy traveling together. In the last two countries they back packed through, though, some terrible things happened. Kristen returns to Australia and Emily goes home to Wisconsin. Emily has a new boyfriend and is trying to work through what happened on their trip. Kristen doesn’t appear affected by what happened but does seem like she wants Emily for herself. When she unexpectedly shows up on Emily’s door saying she is moving home, things get kicked into motion. I don’t want to go into much more as if you want more you should read the book. I had trouble getting started because I didn’t like or trust either girl. Once the story got rolling, though, I kept telling myself that familiar lie...just one more chapter. The ending was a WTH for me. I’ll be thinking about exactly what the ending was for a while. I have several theories bouncing around. Over all it is a book I would recommend to those who enjoy psychological thrillers. I borrowed this from the library and just might need to get my own copy. ( )
