Another favorite of all of our book club picks. ( ) On his release from a reform school after the death of his father Emmett decides to leave Nebraska for California with his little brother Billy to find their mother. First, however, they have to help two absconders from the reform school, Duchess and Woolly, get to New York, where they are hoping to claim and divide Woolly's inheritance. Great fun, with engaging characters I kept reading to learn more about. Ultimately, the book left me wanting to know what happened next, whether Emmett and Billy made it to California and whether they found their mother. This is one of those books that is easy to read, has a great story, but manages to bring out the dark aspects of what does the American Dream, from owning (and loosing) a farm, to being so well off that everyday things, like chain restaurants are new to you. The ending was unexpected, but the story is incredibly readable, from Billy and his belief in the hero story, to Wooly, and how he has such a hard time fitting into this world. Duchess reminds me a bit of Ferris Buhler, a trickster who wants to help his friends, but does it the worst possible way. Emmet just wants to get on with his life after being sent to the juvenal work farm after an awful accident. Even Sally's story was interesting even with a minor part of the book. Well written, very easy to read, but not at all simple, this is an incredible book. I really loved the first quarter of this book, but as it went on, I enjoyed it less and less. It was still an enjoyable read. I do love Billy and his Compendium. His travels with Ulysses were some of my favorite passages in the book. I also found myself having to flip back to previous chapters as often times there were quite a few pages between the characters perspectives. I loved everything about this book. Amor Towles is a master storyteller and thus novel is filled with stories and characters . The story revolves around Emmett, newly released from reform school and reunited with his brother Billy. upon the death of his father. Their mother left them 6 yrs ago and their father lost their farm because of debt. Billy found postcards from their mother ending in Sam Francisco and convinces Emmett to follow the Lincoln Hwy to find their mother. Suddenly 2 bunk mates from Salina appear Duchess and Wooly and plans change and change and change again as Duchess steals Emmett’s car and heads to NYC. Emmett and Billy ride the rails to find him. Adventures insue. The novel reads a bit like an old fashion adventure story with dastardly characters like Preacher John and heroes like Ulysses And magicians like Abacus Applenathe. These characters all gave wonderful stories to tell but the characters themselves are multilayered. Billy is only a young boy but his faith and trust in the goodness of people leads him to a wisdom beyond his years. Duchess is a villain but you sorta like him sometimes but not at others. And Woolly, a lonely, good hearted , sweet boy, trying so hard to do the right things but addled by prescription meds adopted by Duchess who takes him with him from Salina ( reform camp)and hopes to cash in on Woolley’s inheritance . Every character in this novel has something to say on how to live a life, how to survive a life and how to do good in a life. Well done Amor Towles you wrote a brilliant novel. "The bestselling author of A Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility and master of absorbing, sophisticated fiction returns with a stylish and propulsive novel set in 1950s America In June, 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served fifteen months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett's intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden's car. Together, they have hatched an altogether different plan for Emmett's future, one that will take them all on a fateful journey in the opposite direction-to the City of New York. Spanning just ten days and told from multiple points of view, Towles's third novel will satisfy fans of his multi-layered literary styling while providing them an array of new and richly imagined settings, characters, and themes"-- No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
