"Before his 1959 breakthrough, Naked Lunch, an unknown William S. Burroughs wrote Junk, his first novel. It is a candid eye-witness account of times and places that are now long gone, an unvarnished field report from the American post-war underground." "Unafraid to portray himself in 1953 as a confirmed member of two socially-despised under classes (a narcotics addict and a homosexual), Burroughs was writing as a trained anthropologist when he unapologetically described a way of life - in New York, New Orleans, and Mexico City - that by the 1940's was already demonized by the artificial anti-drug hysteria of an opportunistic bureaucracy and a cynical, prostrate media." "For this fiftieth-anniversary edition, eminent Burroughs scholar Oliver Harris has painstakingly recreated the author's original text, word by word, from archival typescripts and places the book's contents against a lively historical background in a comprehensive introduction. Here as well, for the first time, are Burroughs' own unpublished introduction and an entire omitted chapter, along with many "lost" passages, as well as auxiliary texts by Allen Ginsberg and others."--Jacket.… (més)

If you were sitting on a bar-stool at Holland Bar or at Rudy's in Hell's Kitchen and the guy sitting next to you, unbeknownst to you, was William Burroughs, and he casually said that he was feeling ill because he was having withdrawals, and you casually said "sorry to hear that, what's it like being a junky?", this book would be his very matter-of-fact, brutally honest answer to your innocent question. No shame, no guilt, no holds barred. Just the facts, ma'am. Astonishingly honest.

"A junky runs on junk time. When his junk is cut off, the clock runs down and stops. All he can do is hang on and wait for non-junk time to start. A sick junkie has no escape from external time. He can only wait."

"The kick of junk is that you have to have it. Junk is an inoculation of death that keeps the body in a condition of emergency. When the junky is cut off, emergency reactions continue. Kick is seeing things from a special angle. Kick is momentary freedom from the claims of the aging, cautious, frightened flesh. A special way of looking at things." ( )

I listened to the audiobook, which is exceptionally well read. The book itself, although it wanes a bit toward the end, is a fascinating look at drug addict culture in New York City, New Orleans, and Mexico City, as the narrator moves to avoid trouble. The problematic parts of the book are the sporadic mention of his wife, and even kids at one point, who play no part in most of the book. It could easily be criticized for a bit of randomness here and there, but the small details are very well done. This isn't nearly as harrowing, if that's what you're looking for, as Hubert Selby's Requiem for a Dream, but in its matter-of-factness, it rings true. Of course, when the author's opinions intrude, or when you read Burroughs' original 1952 introduction--not published--you enter a bit into the world of fantasy. This edition includes a long introduction and a number of appendices which are worthwhile, but not really necessary to your understanding or enjoyment of the book. It does provide a more complete text, apparently, but I have nothing to compare it with. It is nice to know it hasn't been bowdlerized, though. ( )

This is another book I bought on the strength of it being in '1001 Book to Read Before You Die'. I've wanted to get into some of the works of the 'beat' writers of the time and this seemed to be a good way in. Plus I do love collecting the Penguin modern classics. Usually I don't think the foreword add a huge amount to these books but I found this to be the exception. I really enjoyed the description of how the different editions were published and it seemed fitting that initially it was printed as an Ace Double.

I really liked the tone taken by Burroughs in the text, somehow managing to sound autobiographical and not at the same time. His dry and straightforward observations fit perfectly with the subject matter. There is no pity asked or expected, everything is just laid out as is. The almost off hand way he deals with his homosexuality is striking, more so given the period of history it comes from.

Its difficult to say how true to the time this is but it would seem that certainly in the early parts of the story drug use was rife and almost accepted as a norm. As the Feds step up the locking up of junkies you can feel the change of attitude from Burroughs. In one hand he hates it but in the other he comes across almost relieved at being almost forced into rehab. The coverage of the time spent in the Sanatorium is in equal parts fascinating and horrifying.

I loved this book and really look forward to reading 'Queer' and other 'Beat' classics. ( )

This book reads quite like it describes junk. it's fast and compulsive and gripping, but once finished with it it seems empty, pointless and a bit grubby.
Absolutely thrilling while it lasted. Can't remember anything particularly awesome about it now im done though. ( )
