Master storyteller Alice Hoffman brings us the conclusion of the Practical Magic series in a spellbinding and enchanting final Owens novel brimming with lyric beauty and vivid characters. The Owens family has been cursed in matters of love for over three-hundred years but all of that is about to change. The novel begins in a library, the best place for a story to be conjured, when beloved aunt Jet Owens hears the deathwatch beetle and knows she has only seven days to live. Jet is not the only one in danger--the curse is already at work. A frantic attempt to save a young man's life spurs three generations of the Owens women, and one long-lost brother, to use their unusual gifts to break the curse as they travel from Paris to London to the English countryside where their ancestor Maria Owens first practiced the Unnamed Art. The younger generation discovers secrets that have been hidden from them in matters of both magic and love by Sally, their fiercely protective mother. As Kylie Owens uncovers the truth about who she is and what her own dark powers are, her aunt Franny comes to understand that she is ready to sacrifice everything for her family, and Sally Owens realizes that she is willing to give up everything for love. The Book of Magic is a breathtaking conclusion that celebrates mothers and daughters, sisters and brothers, and anyone who has ever been in love.… (més)

Thank you to Netgalley, Edelweiss , and Simon Schuster for the chance to read this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

The amazing culmination of the Owens family saga.
Sally and Gillian are now grown as are Sally's children, Kylie and Antonia. Each girl has moved onto their own relationship without knowing about magic or the Owens curse. After the death of a main character, the girls learn about the curse just as Kylie's beloved is hit by a car and they are unsure if he will make it. Kylie travels to England to reverse the curse in order to save Gideon. All of the Elder Owens take the trip overseas to save Kylie. It is discovered that a great sacrifice must be made to break the curse - one life for another.

This was the perfect ending to the Practical Magic series. Alice Hoffman has mastered magical realism and makes a complete and fulfilling story. Hoffman has taken us on a journey from the 1600s to the current time detailing the history of the Owens family and the curse that kept them from falling in love. One of my favorite quotes is from the end of the book..."How lucky they'd been to be raised by women who taught them what was most important in this world. Read as many books as you can. Choose courage over caution. Take time to visit libraries. Look for the light in the darkness. Have faith in yourself. Know that love is what matters most." This would make a perfect movie to follow up the original Practical Magic with the original cast and it would be a perfect way to close out the characters. ( )

I should not have read the last book in the series first. I was warned, but I read it anyway. Generations of witches struggle with the curse that dooms their partners if they fall in love. Franny, an old crusty woman in this book, finally figures out how to break the curse and offers herself in place of her niece's fiance. ( )

Book on CD performed by Jennifer Ehle
3.5***

This is the fourth book Hoffman has written about the Owens family witches, and also the fourth as far as chronology of the family story is concerned. However, it’s listed as “Series # 2, because the second and third books she wrote were prequels to the first, Practical Magic.

I came late to the Hoffman fan club. I’m not terribly interested in reading about witches and magic, and I had seen the movie of Practical Magic, which I thought was terrible. But I finally read that first in the series last year and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I like it. So here I am again.

The focus of the plot in this work is the search for a way to break the family curse, and the action covers two continents. What I really like about the books is the relationships between the generations of women, though I really appreciated the storyline exploring Franny and Jet’s brother, Vincent.

Hoffman moves back and forth between various characters, exploring their stories and actions, which all come together in a satisfying conclusion. She does this quite well, keeping the story flowing and the reader turning pages. It’s not great literature, but it is entertaining.

Jennifer Ehle (yes, Elizabeth Bennett in the hit A&E Pride and Prejudice miniseries) does a marvelous job of performing the audiobook version. There are a lot of characters here: male, female, young, old, Americans, British, French. And Ehle handles the multitude with skill. Brava! ( )
