"After a tumultuous period in American politics, a new administration has just been sworn in, and to everyone's surprise the president chooses a political enemy for the vital position of secretary of state. There is no love lost between the president of the United States and Ellen Adams, his new secretary of state. But it's a canny move on the part of the president. With this appointment, he silences one of his harshest critics, since taking the job means Adams must step down as head of her multinational media conglomerate. As the new president addresses Congress for the first time, with Secretary Adams in attendance, Anahita Dahir, a young foreign service officer (FSO) on the Pakistan desk at the State Department, receives a baffling text from an anonymous source. Too late, she realizes the message was a hastily coded warning. What begins as a series of apparent terrorist attacks is revealed to be the beginning of an international chess game involving the volatile and Byzantine politics of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran; the race to develop nuclear weapons in the region; the Russian mob; a burgeoning rogue terrorist organization; and an American government set back on its heels in the international arena. As the horrifying scale of the threat becomes clear, Secretary Adams and her team realize it has been carefully planned to take advantage of four years of an American government out of touch with international affairs, out of practice with diplomacy, and out of power in the places where it counts the most. To defeat such an intricate, carefully constructed conspiracy, it will take the skills of a unique team: a passionate young FSO; a dedicated journalist; and a smart, determined, but as yet untested new secretary of state. State of Terror is a unique and utterly compelling international thriller cowritten by Hillary Rodham Clinton, the 67th secretary of state, and Louise Penny, a multiple award-winning #1 New York Times bestselling novelist"--… (més)

What a hoot! While I looked forward to reading this book, I had some apprehensions since I wasn't much of a fan of [b:The Book of Gutsy Women: Favorite Stories of Courage and Resilience|53086148|The Book of Gutsy Women Favorite Stories of Courage and Resilience|Hillary Rodham Clinton|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1566404674l/53086148._SX50_SY75_.jpg|71431728], which Hillary Clinton co-wrote with her daughter. I needn't have worried.

Louise Penny brought her fiction writing chops to this, Hillary Clinton brought her inside knowledge of the US state department and international politics, and together they created a story that is face-paced and highly entertaining. I would imagine it would be more appealing to women than men, but there was only one point when I felt emphasis on the female perspective did not ring true. And there are female bad guys and male good guys.

If you are a fan of 45, you're not going to like this book; the character who is his surrogate does not came off well. But then, if you're a fan of 45 you probably wouldn't choose to read a political thriller featuring women in many of the primary roles.

Hard to know how to rate this since I've only read a few political thrillers. I don't even have a GR shelf for them. But I'm going to give it 5 stars just because. ( )

Thank you to The Girlfriend and S&S for this book.

I do admit that I'm not a reader of political thrillers or books about assassins, terrorists, etc. but I really enjoyed this one. It kept me on my toes and it was fast reading. Even though it was close to 500 pages I finished it in 3 days which is normal but not for a book this big mostly. I thought a lot of it would go over my head or I wouldn't understand a lot of the plot but I really did understand it.

I was holding my breath for the last 20 pages or so to see what would happen. ( )

Des bombes sont installées dans 3 villes des USA et la secrétaire d’Etat Ellen essaie de trouver l’auteur des ces bombes ( )

Reading this on the heels of Ken Follett's NEVER was a mistake. Many similarities. The US and its politics are in an uproar from the former President and the Secretary of State is picking up the pieces. Behind the scene deals and exchanges during that last term have left the country vulnerable and the Secretary of State is figuring it out....as if her life depended on it...which it does. Certainly leaves itself open to a sequel. ( )

Excellent!!

I approached State of Terror with apprehension. Previously, I read a recent book in the Inspector Gamache series and found it no better than average (three stars). So, I doubted a Louise Penny – Hillary Clinton collaboration could produce a superb thriller like James Patterson has done (twice) in collaboration with Bill Clinton. My fears were unfounded. State of Terror is a page-turning thriller I hated to put down.

Ellen Adams is one month into her position as Secretary of State. She was appointed by a newly-elected President who hates her and plans to set up a series of failures and fire her in disgrace. Shortly after she returns from her first such setback in South Korea, a series of bombs explode in the UK, Paris, and Frankfurt, killing hundreds. It soon becomes clear that the explosions are a prequel to nuclear explosions scheduled to occur in the United States. One of the targets is the White House, and Ellen finds herself leading the effort to locate the bombs and prevent a catastrophe.

State of Terror is ranks with the second Patterson-Clinton collaboration, The President’s Daughter, and Colin Jost’s A Very Punchable Face as the best books I have read this year. ( )

The most amazing thing that has happened in my lifetime is neither putting a man on the moon nor Facebook having 2.8 billion monthly active users. It is that in the 75 years, 7 months, and 13 days since Nagasaki, a nuclear bomb has not been detonated. -- Tom Peters
