In this graphic novel, Chester is invited to a slumber party. Being a shy introvert, he doesn’t know what to do at the party, but feels he has to go. Meanwhile, his ghost friend Simon has to pass an inspection which grades his ability to haunt. They decide to help each other out by giving rather silly advice.

This was a cute and funny book, appropriate for younger readers. I’d say a 7 or 8 year old could read it, and my 4 year old enjoyed listening to it and seeing the pictures. ( )

Very cute book for 1st through 3rd grade kids. The bullies in Chester's school are far scarier than the ghost, Simon, who is assigned to haunt him. Matter of fact, Simon is Chester's best friend, which is all fine until Simon finds out he is going to have a Haunting Inspection. He has failed all his Haunting Inspections in the past, and then moved on to another person to haunt. At the same time, Chester is invited to a sleepover complete with school bully. For an adult, of course the plot is predictable but for the intended audience, school bullies are something they sadly know about all too well. It’s always nice to know other kids are dealing with it too. It looks at first as though Chester’s and Simon’s troubles have nothing in common, and they even have to choose which problem they are going to face until… You can see what’s coming, but perhaps the kids reading can’t. Even if they can, it is still delightfully funny and satisfying to see it play out. ( )

This is a fun graphic novel in the Simon and Chester book series. My son has been enjoying all of the Simon and Chester books. This one is broken up into chapters, which is a little different from some of the others in the series.The story feels a little disjointed at times, and the plot moves very quickly, but overall it flows well enough. It mostly has a good message, though there are a lot of mean kids in it who tease and bully Chester. It all works out in the end. The illustrations are engaging and fun. It has a diverse cast of characters. There are silly jokes to make kids laugh. It's suitable for younger readers and is similar in tone and feel to the Kondo and Kuzumi, Narwhal and Jelly, and Catstronauts books. ( )

Simon and Chester is a great children's middle grade graphic novel series that both my daughter (age 9) and I highly recommend! We laughed out loud several times and appreciated the humor and heart in Simon and Chester's friendship.
