I'm about half way through this audiobook and I'm hooked. It took awhile - the start didn't grab me and it was just a coincidence that I went back to it. Because I wasn't listening fully, I missed who the characters were until I stopped and wrote them down and figured out the connections.

The novel is set in the small town of Mason, Kansas, a commute from Kansas City. There are descriptions of the beautiful Spanish Plaza in downtown Kansas City - makes me want to go there, not to mention all the succulent beef they were always feasting on. I don't recall that a book has taken me to Kansas City before.

Two sisters, Kelly and Vera; two brothers, Adam and his younger brother; and a big cast of other characters. It's seems obvious what is going to happen, but the ride will be delicious and distracting.

I loved each of the four central characters - they were so different. Vera in particular was this fascinating single minded force.

As much as I enjoyed this book I don't know why it had to be so long - 13.5 hours audiobook. It was read by Susan Bennett - she played with it, enjoying the humour. Her male voices were pretty good too. I don't recall that it dragged in any particular place because of this humour, but the story did wind along slowly, like summer days or the tedium of a small town, or being too busy all the time as everyone seems to be. Meant to Be by Jude Deveraux is a story that covers three generations in Mason, Kansas beginning in 1972. Vera and Kelly Exton have their futures planned out. Vera is looking forward to joining her boyfriend in the Peace Corps in Africa. Kelly is going to marry her beau while working with his father in his veterinary practice. The 1970s were a time when things were changing, and people questioned their roles which is what happens with Kelly and Vera. These two women need to decide what is best for them even if it upsets others. Meant to Be is an intriguing escapist novel. I thought the story was well-written with developed characters. I liked that Vera and Kelly were strong, smart women. Meant to Be is an appealing romance. There is some foul language in the book as well as intimate situations. I have been enjoying this author’s books since I was a teen, and I did miss the humor that is normally present in Jude Deveraux’s books. Lounging by the pool with a copy of Meant to Be is a lovely way to pass a warm afternoon. Meant to Be is a charming multigenerational tale with protest rallies, fields of fruit trees, high-speed horses, hidden hideaways, matchmaking mamas, and heart pounding romances. ( )

I typically love Jude Deveraux and her witty, sassy romances, but this one just dragged on and on for me. It is the story of people who foolishly give up their dreams so others can prosper.
Vera Exton wants to travel the world, but she waits until her sister Kelly finishes veterinary school. Vera plans to marry Adam who she has been friends with her whole life. However, he does not excite her the way Miguel does. But, Miguel wants to stay in Kansas, so he does something completely foolish to force Vera to go. I didn’t buy that this was an unselfish act—it was just stupid!!
Kelly and Adam find that they have deep love for each other. As in her other books, many of the couples are with other partners at first, and then realize that someone else is actually the person for them.
There are lots of relationships in this book, some are so obvious, but don’t really have the spark that couples in Jude’s other books do. The book spans three generations, and the message is “do not give up on your dreams”.
This was a disappointment for me. ( )
