The story opens with a mother and daughter at loggerheads, and grandma called in to mediate. Most of the novel is a flashback. It's fast-moving and very readable, but difficult situations seem to get resolved rather too quickly, and the conclusion - returning to the time-frame of the prologue - is rather obvious. ( )

Audra is a nurse who marries a man from the lower classes. He doesn't want her to work but she does to give her daughter as many opportunities as possible. Her daughter has an inherited talent for painting which she goes to art school because of. In repayment to her mother for the hours of work she struggled with she starts designing her own clothes and selling them to Audra's chagrin.
