My review, as posted in Tintin Books

"Cigars of the Pharaoh" marks the dawn of a new era for Tintin, an era in which Hergé began dogged research, and sought to introduce plotting and pacing instead of simply regular cliffhangers. That is not to say things were completed: Herge was obviously obligated to give cliffhangers in the album's original serialised format, and some elements of the countries were less well-researched than his later works. But this album is certainly the next step in the great evolution of Tintin's stories.

This is certainly a thoroughly enjoyable, if somewhat peripatetic, work, and shows - with its addition of a bustling cast of recurring and guest characters, and a thrilling variety of atmospheres - just why Tintin was already taking off. ( )

A wonderful improvement to the previous books. Tintin has his adventures in Egypt, with the most surprising thing to see is that the stereotypes that made the previous books uncomfortable to read are no longer present. This is the first book in the series I can honestly say I had a pleasant time reading.

In my review for the previous book, I said that the only reason Tintin was able to get out of his dangerous situations was because of sheer dumb luck, over and over again. Now, I can safely say that it isn't luck that got him out of these sticky situations (although it does uncomfortably gleam its way here and there throughout the story), but rather that Tintin has a clever plan up his sleeve.

This also marks the inclusion of Thomson and Thompson, the detective duo. They were a lot of fun to watch and helps Tintin get out of some of his more difficult-to-escape situations. The ones that I couldn't see Tintin getting out on his own, nor did I entirely believe that Hergé knew how to get him out either.

In short, this is a fun read; I'd recommend it to those who want a fun, little children's story. Not to mention, I'm looking forward to continue reading Tintin's new, exciting adventures. ( )

Der vorliegende Band, “Die Zigarren des Pharaos”, entstand im Jahr 1932 und wurde 1955 überarbeitet und koloriert. Dabei wurden auch geringfügige inhaltliche Änderungen vorgenommen, die aber der Geschichte keinen Abbruch tun.

Tatsächlich ist dieser Band der erste, der eine konsistente und unterhaltsame Geschichte erzählt und nicht mehr die vorher übliche Ansammlung von mehr oder minder lose verknüpften Szenen.

Erstmals tauchen auch die ersten altbekannten Figuren auf: Hier sind es die tollpatschigen Detektive Schulze und Schultze, die jedoch über weite Teile des Bandes Tim festnehmen wollen und ihm – im Gegensatz zu späteren Bänden der Reihe – nicht oder nur aus wenig altruistischen Gründen helfen.

Auch eine Premiere: Dies ist der erste Band, der mich wirklich unterhalten und mir Spaß gemacht hat.
