Ropa’s business lost all credibility when she took time out to figure out what was happening to the kids that disappeared. She solved her case but wrecked her reputation. Now she must find some way to supplement her income to make sure her sister and grams have food and a warm place to stay. She has a great opportunity to apprentice for a with a renowned magic user who is a bit eccentric. But never having been to a magic school gets in her way when she fails the magic test. So, no apprentice ship for her. However, the magic man sees potential and decides he wants to work with Ropa. But it will have to be as an intern. That means no money. Ugggghhhhh. However, Ropa can not pass up the opportunity no matter how much she may want to.

To help earn a little green she takes on a case at the Our Lady of Mysterious Aliments magical hospital. Something has happened to a boy named Max Wu that is beyond all their knowledge of medicine and magic.

While the main story is finding a cure for Max, this story has multiple story lines going just like the original books in the series. As readers we get to learn about the Bank of Scotland and how it came to be, how it exists in this alternative society, and how magic is tied up with all of it. We also meat a nice Canadian who just wants his family money out of the bank.

Plus, we finally lean more about the library of the dead. There is actually more about the Library of the Dead in this book then there ever was in book one. And it is really interesting. Really.

I liked this book just like I did the first one. I find even though it is not the best book I have ever read; I cannot stop thinking or talking about it. I like how it mimics life where everything is happening at once. Not use one story line from beginning to end. The author does a great job of weaving and completing most of these story lines but leaving just enough to make you excited for the sequel. And that I am. I need book 3 now. But odds are I may have to reread books 1 and 2 before I start that a year from now. ( )

The utter obliviousness of people with money to those without. GAH! Ropa is trying to get her way into the magical society, to try to find a reliable life and eat, meanwhile they offer her an unpaid internship and all the problems in the world. She's helping her friend Priya discover why an illness is resisting magical and medical remedies and meanwhile trying to learn more about the world she finds herself in, a world where everyone seems to want her out of it.
With everyone keeping her in the dark no wonder she gets things wrong and steps on the wrong feet occasionally but survival is hard in her world and she needs to survive, something many of the people with power in her world forget about her.
Didn't hit as hard as the first story, it's starting to get into a grove of series and I'm interested to see what happens next and what is going to happen to the various friendships and relationships along the way. But Seriously Ropa needs a break. ( )

Absolutely wonderful. More players, since it's a sequel, so I had to work harder to keep up at times, but it never felt too difficult (as some fantasy books can). I also really loved the history, the Scottish mythological bits, and just the general feeling of being immersed in a place I've not studied much but can absolutely see when I look through Ropa's eyes. Lots of loose threads left, and I can't believe I've got to wait some more for the next book! ( )

First things first, I was given a copy of this book by NetGalley for the purposes of a review. Unfortunately, for me, it was a pdf which I would rather not have to read. But since I had been so impressed by by Huchu's first book in the series *The Library of the Dead*, I decided to go ahead and shell out the scheckels (~$15) and buy epub a copy for myself. So that says something right there.

T. L. Huchu's *Edinburgh Nights* series revolves around a rough and ready young woman saddled with caring for her aged grandbmother and younger sister in a world that is mostly past its best-before date. A world, however, that also encompasses magic (or advanced mathematics as some style it) and speaking with ghosts—a talent young Ropa Mayo uses to make her meager living. Book two of the series opens with Ropa, having solved a mystery in the previous book that many of the ruling class would rather have swept under the carpet, trying to settle down in her new role as intern at the General Discoveries Directorate. And trying to make some money.

As previously implied, I really enjoyed the world and characters that Huchu has created. Ropa is young woman saddled with great responsibilities (of the mundane sort) and possessing great talent (of the magical sort). The plot of *Our Lady of Mysterious Ailments* is ostensibly about her attempts to find the cause of a mysterious illness, but really the whole series is about her working towards finding happiness, contentment and security in a world that has gone to ruin; and of course, money.

Huchu's Edinburgh is a fascinating place rich with geography, history and a Scottish accent, but he doesn't let his world building overpower the story; instead he slowly builds out the reality of Ropa's world and the life she she is force to live in organic snippets and hints and not a few history lessons. An experience that results in a much richer backdrop, and one that still leaves plenty of story to be told.

I absolutely loved Book one, especially the way Huchu painted the canvas with his characters and backdrop and I think he did an amazing job of following it up in this one—it's not easy to maintain that sort of rich texture and slow build-up without either falling into the trap of a big info dump or starting to add extraneous details just for the sake of it. Really, how can you not love a book that has a great setting, engaging characters and is presented with grace, finesse and whole lot of craft. I am already looking forward to Book three—hopefully the wait won't be too long.

I have not read the first book in the series, but didn't feel like I needed to scramble in order to get up to speed in this one. Once you become accustomed to Ropa and her companions' dialect/slang, you feel right at home. Some of the expressions are dead-on funny and her use of quotes by authors and philosophers in literature flesh out situations nicely. Part teen trying to survive, part supernatural, and part mystery sums this up nicely. Minor characters are relevant to the story as opposed to being sprinkled in to add flavor. If you're having trouble getting into this book, PERSIST, you won't regret doing so for you'll find a dandy tale in your hands. ( )
