In the early 1970s, when he was just 20 years old, David Cassidy achieved the sort of teen idol fame that is rarely seen. He was mobbed everywhere he went. His clothes were regularly ripped off by adoring fans. He sold records the world over. He was bigger than Elvis. And all thanks to a hit TV show called The Partridge Family. David Cassiday, in his own words, gives a brutally frank account of those mindblowing days of stardom in which being David Cassidy played second fiddle to being Keith Partridge. Including stories of sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll that explode the myth of Cassidy as squeaky clean, it is also the story of how to keep on living life and loving yourself when the fickle fans fall away. David Cassidy is also the author of C'mon, Get Happy: Fear and Loathing on the Partridge Family Bus. … (més)

Cassidy's second autobiography, this one encompasses his entire life up to it's 2007 publication. He includes his childhood and teen years, the beginnings of his drug use, and his views on his self-absorbed father, actor Jack Cassidy. That relationship, or lack of, with his father, threads through the book as David becomes a super star at just nineteen years old. He covers the years of "The Partridge Family" show, making the albums and touring as much as humanly possible. He is surprisingly honest about groupies, drugs, his feelings about his fellow co-stars, his failed relationships with women, and about the infamous Rolling Stone issue that nearly derailed his career. Throughout the book are short asides from people in Cassidy's personal life or career that give their version of whatever he's discussing. Sometimes these add a layer to the subject, but they're often a testimonial to how talented or generally awesome David Cassidy is, and they are often in a row, person after person talking about him in amazement. Cassidy does mention a few times that he recognizes his ability to be self-absorbed, and it's definitely there, but he's also candid about his financial problems, something most rock stars would never get into.

This was a rollercoaster. It helps if you are familiar with some of the Partridge Family songs he discusses, but anyone who wants to read about what show business was like in the 70's, about how the corporations literally owned a performer's face and name, would get a lot out of this story. ( )
