From USA Today bestselling author Mimi Matthews comes a supernatural Victorian gothic retelling of Charlotte Brontë's timeless classic.

Yorkshire, 1843. When disgraced former schoolmaster John Eyre arrives at Thornfield Hall to take up a position as tutor to two peculiar young boys, he enters a world unlike any he's ever known. Darkness abounds, punctuated by odd bumps in the night, strange creatures on the moor, and a sinister silver mist that never seems to dissipate. And at the center of it all, John's new employerâ??a widow as alluring as she is mysterious.

Sixteen months earlier, heiress Bertha Mason embarked on the journey of a lifetime. Marriage wasn't on her itinerary, but on meeting the enigmatic Edward Rochester, she's powerless to resist his preternatural charm. In letters and journal entries, she records the story of their rapidly-disintegrating life together, and of her gradual realization that Mr. Rochester isn't quite the man he appears to be. In fact, he may not be a man at all.

From a cliff-top fortress on the Black Sea coast to an isolated estate in rural England, John and Bertha contend with secrets, danger, and the eternal struggle between light and darkness. Can they help each other vanquish the demons of the past? Or are some evils simply too powerful to conquer?… (més)

I usually enjoy Ms. Matthews' books a lot and I also like retellings of classics like Jane Eyre so I expected to find this book right up my alley. However, I struggled to get through it, finding it plodding and too close to the originals (this is also a retelling of Dracula).
Part of it was due to the gender swap, or maybe not the gender switch so much as that John Eyre and Bertha Mason just didn't have enough of their original character to make the swap interesting. Incorporating the Dracula bits wasn't enough to overcome the deficits in the characters, especially as both stories are so known.
I'll continue to read and enjoy Ms. Matthews' historical fiction, but this one was a miss for me. ( )

October 1843 After the death of Lady Helen Burn, at Lowton, tutor John Eyre takes a position far away in Yorkshire. At Thornfield Hall home to Mrs Rochester and her two young wards, Stephen and Peter.
Following the deaths of her parents and acquiring her inheritance, Bertha Mason, travels the continent and meets her future husband Mr. Rochester. The story of her life from then is told in conjunction with Eyre's until they met.
An entertaining and well-written Victorian Gothic story, blending seamlessly two classic books. With its wonderful portrayal of the two main characters and their story.

Gothic reimagining!

Impressive Gothic novel combining aspects of Bram Stocker’s Dracula and Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre, with an arresting twist. Mimi Matthews has nailed it. 1843, John Eyre, a tutor has lost his job and his traditional belief in God, through the unchristian attitudes of the community he’s lived in. He takes up the role of tutor to a pair of boys, wards to the mysterious and alluring Mrs Rochester (when she finally arrives). Things just don’t feel right. The boys are unusual, they appear to be mute, some might even say haunted—in what ways remains to be seen. Strange happening surround Thornfield Hall near Millport, off from the Yorkshire Coast. Things definitely go bump in the night. Evil is abroad, although recognising that is muted. I was riveted, caught up the drama. There are signs of unrest on the way to the Hall. Too many coincidencal happenings not to be alarmed. John might not have been giving them much credence but I was!
It took me a while to understand what was going on. The various letters between two female friends were a puzzle, until I sorted the order out. All paving the way for what was to come!
Nicely crafted, Matthews has rendered a wonderful read! I particularly enjoyed her notes at the end talking about the novels on which she based this story. Fascinating!

I’ve read several books by Mimi Matthews, and this is definitely a departure from her normal tales. It’s based quite closely on the novel Jane Eyre but with a gender switch of the main character and some added twists and components. It’s also much darker and more gothic than her usual writing. I must admit to having to read it in the daytime, as parts—well, most of it—are spooky and surreal.

The main character, John Eyre, is personable, caring, and swept up into the mysterious happenings at Thornfield Hall. Bertha Rochester is beautiful, adventurous, and enigmatic, and I had a hard time relating to her for much of the story. It took a while for me to care about her plight and start hoping for a happy ending for her.

Although there were some intriguing added elements to this Jane Eyre retelling, I could guess much of what was going to happen. The writing is smooth, flows well, and shows typical Mimi Matthews talents in penning a novel. She is a master at creating colorful, interesting characters. I must say that this isn’t my favorite of her books, but it’s a solid, compelling read, and it will appeal to those who enjoy gothic, dark tales.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary ARC from the author. All opinions are my own. ( )

John Eyre by Mimi Matthews
A Tale of Darkness and Shadow

I am on the fence after finishing this book. It is a well written gothic story with some horror, a bit of romance, more than a hint of supernatural elements, and basically a retelling of Jane Eyre with gender swap of the main characters. I liked John and enjoyed his part of the story but felt that he was not as strong as many of the male main characters in Ms. Matthews previous books. I also felt that Bertha Rochester was an overwhelming character that was difficult to warm up to.

What I liked:
* The dark atmosphere
* The writing
* John: honest, stalwart, subordinate, calling to teach, an enigma – would have liked to get to know him better
* Stephen and Peter: two young boys with much to overcome and the wards of Mrs. Rochester
* Fairfax: Butler and confidant
* Bertha: strong, resilient, enduring, did what was necessary, intrepid, hopeful, abrupt, a survivor, and a conundrum
* The way the story developed
* The use of journals and letters to tell the backstory
* The resolution

What I didn’t like:
* Having trouble warming up to Bertha
* The difficult pasts of John, Stephen and Peter
* The evil I was meant to dislike

Did I enjoy this book? Yes, but not quite as well as previous books by this author
Would I read more by this author? Yes

Thank you to NetGalley and Perfectly Proper Press for the ARC – This is my honest review.
