This was not as good as the others in the series, though it is almost impossible to be better than Empress of Salt and Fortune. However, it's always lovely to be back with Chih and Almost Brilliant. ( ) 4.5/5 I bought this without realizing it was part of a series. Luckily, the series is written so that you can read it in any order! According to other reviews, this one is not as good as the others - which is great news for me because I really enjoyed this one! I feel like in 100 pages Nghi Vo was able to fit more story than I have read in longer books, without it feeling suffocating or confusing. I'm not really one to read books more than once, but especially with how quick of a read this is, I can defintiely see myself reading it again. I can't wait to grab the other two next time I'm at the bookstore! It’s so nice to see Chih again! And Almost Brilliant too, of course, I would never forget to say hello to you! The tone in this novella is different from the first two in the series – it is a lighter adventure story, even though the darkness is still there. Chih is more of a protagonist, too. I liked that. In the very first pages, we are treated to a scene right out of a kung fu flick. “ ‘That was Southern Monkey style,’ Almost Brilliant insisted.” Thank you, author. Adventures continue after that, and lots of stories are told – some of these stories are truer than others. “Into the Riverlands” was a quick read, easy to love. À suivre… https://fromtheheartofeurope.eu/hugos-2023-best-novella/ A very nicely done story drawing from the wuxia tradition, a travel narrative with lots of sub-narratives. There’s a particularly good discussion of heroic women who are not also beautiful. I could practically smell the landscape.
Into the Riverlands and its characters are as delightful as the two previous installments. My only quibble, and it is a very minor one, is that this is a case where novella length, while sufficient for the story the author wanted to tell, isn’t long enough for the story I wanted to read. Thus far, even Vo’s novels have not been all that long. Generally, I am in favour of shorter books but in this case, the opportunity to stay in Vo’s worlds longer would be welcome. "The Empress of Salt and Fortune Wandering cleric Chih of the Singing Hills travels to the riverlands to record tales of the notorious near-immortal martial artists who haunt the region. On the road to Betony Docks, they fall in with a pair of young women far from home, and an older couple who are more than they seem. As Chih runs headlong into an ancient feud, they find themselves far more entangled in the history of the riverlands than they ever expected to be. Accompanied by Almost Brilliant, a talking bird with an indelible memory, Chih confronts old legends and new dangers alike as they learn that every story-beautiful, ugly, kind, or cruel-bears more than one face. The novellas of The Singing Hills Cycle are linked by the cleric Chih, but may be read in any order, with each story serving as an entry point"-- No s'han trobat descripcions de biblioteca. |
