In this engrossing and gripping fantasy set in the world of the New York Times bestselling Others series, an inn owner and her friends must find a killer--before it's too late.... Crowbones will gitcha if you don't watch out!Deep in the territory controlled by the Others--shape-shifters, vampires, and even deadlier paranormal beings--Vicki DeVine has made a new life for herself running The Jumble, a rustic resort. When she decides to host a gathering of friends and guests for Trickster Night, at first everything is going well between the humans and the Others. But then someone arrives dressed as Crowbones, the Crowgard bogeyman. When the impostor is killed along with a shape-shifting Crow, and the deaths are clearly connected, everyone fears that the real Crowbones may have come to The Jumble--and that could mean serious trouble. To "encourage" humans to help them find some answers, the Elders and Elementals close all the roads, locking in suspects and victims alike. Now Vicki, human police chief Grimshaw, vampire lawyer Ilya Sanguinati, and the rest of their friends have to figure out who is manipulating events designed to pit humans against Others--and who may have put Vicki DeVine in the crosshairs of a powerful hunter.… (més)

While technically Crowbones is the third book in Anne Bishop's World of the Others series, it is a direct sequel to book 1, Lake Silence. Events from book 2, Wild Country, have no impact on this book and could be skipped if desired.

Crowbones is gonna gitcha!

A Halloween inspired Others novel! It's Trickster Night and what goes bump in the night that can scare one of the Others? The party at the Jumble is going well up until Crowbones, the Crowgard bogeyman, arrives to scare everyone. When the imposter is later discovered dead, along with a mutilated Crow, the residents begin to wonder if the real Crowbones has arrived, which would be bad news for everyone.

Given that the Others naturally border the horror genre it was a fun way to add more lore to the world while linking it to our own. As an added bonus, Crowbones is a fairly frightening myth that literally scares the feathers off the Others. While I felt a little bad for the Crowgard, it also made for some humorous moments.

It was nice to catch up with the characters from the Jumble. Vicki is still my least favorite of the leads in this world. The good news is all the supporting cast get plenty of page time through various points of view. I found the POV of the titular Other to be fascinating. It's nice to see that Bishop still has a few things to show us new in this world. It made me a bit sad to see that the Others can be corrupted like humans. Still, this being an Others novel, you basically know what to expect. And yes, the bad guys get their comeuppance in the end in a most satisfactory manner. ( )

I think this might change before publication, so take this review with a grain of salt.

I was really excited for the newest book in the Others universe, but this particular installment didn't quite hang together. The storytelling feels less polished and more mechanical. Usually there's a more graceful recap, but this time it was fairly plodding and also relatively long -- which is to say that it felt like it took some wading through to get to the actual story.

Once the story started, I enjoyed it. I've also kind of wondered where this series is going for a little while -- what's next after the Great Predation? How many stupid humans are there and why is it so hard to weed them out? And I think this answered that question in an interesting way. Despite the long intro, it feels like you need to know and love Vicky/ the Sproing community in order to care much about the characters, but since I do, I was into it, and I think those who enjoyed Lake Silence will be delighted to see that story continue.

We return to Sproing and The Jumble with Vickie and associates as malign human influences threaten the growing town. Well before the climax it's fairly clear who the bad actors are though there are twists. And the Others are very accommodating and helpful even in smaller matters in a way that erodes the impact of their menace for friendlies. ( )

Note: While this is book 3 in the series called The World of the Others, it's a direct sequel to book 1, Lake Silence. Book 2, Wild Country, is set in a different location in the same world.

4 stars is the lowest I've rated any of the books in Bishop's Others or World of the Others series. Crowbones was good - really good - but not as nearly as compelling as most of the titles.

In part, this might have been because I'd read the jacket flap, which has never been an issue before. But this time it left me with the impression that this story was going to have a locked-room mystery vibe to it, and it didn't, at all. That's not a bad thing, and there are murders to be solved, but it jarred with my expectations for the first third of the book. I'd have been better off reading it blind, so to speak.

This book also felt more human-centric in focus than any of the previous books. I can't actually say it was, I'm just not left with the usual feeling I get from these books: that I've visited another reality where humans are only bit players with big ambitions. The others didn't seem to exude their usual air of menace and, hardly ever had to fight the urge not to eat the annoying humans. I don't know a thing about Anne Bishop - I'm not the type to research my authors, or visit fan sites, but I get an impression that the MC, Vicki, has a touch of the autobiographical about her. I have less than nothing to base that on; she just reads as though she comes from a very personal place. Whether that's good or bad depends on your perspective, I guess. I liked that she had no problem laughing at herself, and that she recognised where her anxiety stemmed from, but she also made me roll my eyes more than a few times.

Neither of those things are complaints, really, although I'd have liked to see more large-scale smackdowns. Given that I've re-read every one of the other books in both series and every time found something more to like, it may be that once I re-read this one I'll pick up different nuances I missed this time. Whether I do or not, I really enjoyed Crowbones and my brief holiday in the world of the Others. Call me crazy, but this is a world I'd happily live in. ( )
