With concise prose and engaging illustrations, Big Bear Was Not the Same by Joanna Rowland provided a compassionate, child-friendly approach to understanding and dealing with trauma and PTSD. John Ledda captured the story and the characters’ emotions expertly. I loved his style of illustration, as I found it relaxed and fun. It’s clear in this story's delivery that Joanna Rowland understands children well, but while children are the target audience, this book can benefit adults, too. Big Bear Was Not the Same is a phenomenal resource for those suffering first-hand with PTSD and for their loved ones, helping them understand what’s going on with themselves and one another. Joanna Rowland showed just how much it can help those suffering from PTSD to know they’re not alone. I loved how she encouraged empathy and friendship throughout the work. I also liked the added information about trauma provided in the back of the book by a licensed therapist. I will definitely be on the lookout for more of Joanna Rowland’s and John Ledda’s work.
