The events of the story actually take place during the timeline of the previous book, so there may be spoilers for those who do not read in order. While the story is touching, especially the realistic portrayal of the pain and suffering resulting from military casualties and PTSD, there are certain elements that fail to resonate. To begin with, the overt Christian themes did not appeal to me personally. Yes, this is a Christmas book and other readers will feel differently to me, so take this comment with a grain of salt. The most problematic issue revolves around Marcie's determination to find Ian and her stubborn instance on inserting herself into his life. Her actions come across as desperate and downright strange. Nevertheless, Marcie and Ian's romance works as their personalities and experiences complement each other and their relationship is sweet and endearing. The cameo appearances by the Virgin River regulars are an added bonus. Vanessa and Paul's book is next and I look forward to it.
