INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * GOOD MORNING AMERICA BOOK CLUB PICK * A must-read debut! Meet Elizabeth Zott: a one-of-a-kind scientist in 1960s California whose career takes a detour when she becomes the unlikely star of a beloved TV cooking show in this novel that is "irresistible, satisfying and full of fuel. It reminds you that change takes time and always requires heat" (The New York Times Book Review).   "It's the world versus Elizabeth Zott, an extraordinary woman determined to live on her own terms, and I had no trouble choosing a side.... A page-turning and highly satisfying tale: zippy, zesty, and Zotty." --Maggie Shipstead, best-selling author of Great Circle Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it's the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel-prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with--of all things--her mind. True chemistry results.    But like science, life is unpredictable. Which is why a few years later Elizabeth Zott finds herself not only a single mother, but the reluctant star of America's most beloved cooking show Supper at Six. Elizabeth's unusual approach to cooking ("combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride") proves revolutionary. But as her following grows, not everyone is happy. Because as it turns out, Elizabeth Zott isn't just teaching women to cook. She's daring them to change the status quo.     Laugh-out-loud funny, shrewdly observant, and studded with a dazzling cast of supporting characters, Lessons in Chemistry is as original and vibrant as its protagonist.  … (més)

Such a fun and funny read. Every once in a while one needs to read a book to take their mind away from their problems. This book did that for me. But despite being fun, there was a woman’s equality theme as the main premise of the book. So there was some substance. Enjoy! ( )

A young woman comitted to being a research chemist finds herself the victim of sexual prejudice. Despite that she is accomplished enough that she makes a mark as a researcher. Then she falls in love with another research chemist who is also brilliant. She doesn’t want to marry but they live together. and he dies as the result of a freak accident. It turns out she is pregnant. She has a daughter but has to deal with ongoing prejudice. Then she becomes the star of a TV show about cooking. Her daughter and even her dog are very accomplished individuals and in the end she overcomes the prejudices against her. ( )

Elizabeth has a brilliant mind but she is stuck in the 60s where men rule the sciences and no matter what she does, she can't seem to get around the "old boys club". The novel takes a light hearted tone throughout much of the story - but there are some real moments of heartbreaking reality. Elizabeth has some horrible experiences but she never lets those get in the way of her science, even when her life takes detours she isn't happy with. I really liked the ending and felt like it was a fitting end for all involved - everyone got what they deserved, though there was still a lingering sadness over the loss of Calvin. There was so much to love about this story! ( )

I throughly enjoyed this book having grown up in this woman-limiting time. The first 2/3 was engrossing and entertaining. Bthe resolution was not as smooth, but very good. One complaint is the Catholic-bashing, but it didn’t stop me from having a great read. ( )

loved it, though it was sometimes hard watching the character have to deal with idiots all the time :) ( )

Back in 1961, when women wore shirtwaist dresses and joined garden clubs and drove legions of children around in seatbeltless cars without giving a second thought; back before anyone knew there’d even be  a sixties movement, much less one that it’s participants would spend the next sixty years chronicling: back when the big wars were over and the secret wars had just begun and people were starting to think  and believe everything was possible, the thirty-year-old mother of Madeline Zott rose before dawn every morning and felt certain of just one thing: her life was over.
