A quoi sert de lire (et d'écrire) des romans, oeuvres de fiction qui ne racontent par définition jamais ce qui s'est passé ou comment cela s'est passé ? Quelles richesses caractéristiques de l'être humain cachent ces mensonges ? Vargas Llosa nous dit que l'homme a par nature besoin de se rêver d'autres vies que la sienne, que le roman ne nous révèle pas la réalité de faits historiques mais les fantasmes, le monde intérieur de l'homme. Après cette introduction, il présente de façon très courte mais très intéressante quelques oeuvres majeures du XXe siècle. ( )

Volgens Mario Vargas Llosa is het Spaans een breedvoerige taal met een groot emotioneel bereik. “In ons proza zijn kleur, temperatuur en muziek even belangrijk als ideeën en soms belangrijker.” Hij is een bewonderaar van het werk van de Argentijnse Luis Borges die vooral naam maakte met korte verhalen. Deze schrijver heeft een grote invloed op hem uitgeoefend.
Llosa vertelt hoe zes van zijn romans tot stand zijn gekomen. Zijn werk gaat terug op eigen ervaringen, op wat achteraf beslissend bleek te zijn voor hem. Zoals zijn verblijf op een militaire kostschool, zijn marxistische periode op de universiteit en zijn eerste huwelijk met ‘tante Julia’, een aangetrouwd familielid.
Er is één boek dat er voor hem uitspringt. ‘De oorlog van het einde van de wereld’ is zijn enige verhaal dat zich niet in Peru, maar in Brazilië afspeelt. Het vindt ook niet plaats in de tijd waarin hij leeft, maar aan het eind van de negentiende eeuw.
De geheimen en trucjes van het schrijven van een roman worden uitgelegd in acht essays. Een aanrader voor de liefhebbers van zijn romans en voor wie zijn werk wil leren kennen. ( )
